Well, we made it through 2016, well most of us did (RIP Tom Kirby and lots of rock stars). Anybody get records? I got a few

Rarely seen Zombies 45. Part of my long time goal of collecting non US 45s on US labels. Only missing a few for a complete collection (anyone have the Pretty Things 45 on Rare Earth)? (on top of an original New Tweedy Brothers LP I got this year as well)

A couple of nice sleeves bought for cheap from ebay

Rare City Squires 45, the last record I needed to get every Ohio garage 45 (as listed in TBM/BTBM)

Congrats, I've been looking for the Columbia label Zombies 45 for decades - an ebay grab?
My other big major label U.S. want - the Hollies "If I Needed Someone". A collector claims to own one. Never seen it (or sniffed it, as bosshoss would say).
I'll try and get a listing together after Xmas, currently working long hours (10+) every day since Thanksgiving, not much time to do anything.

The Zombies was a $3 record show grab - from a misc XYZ filing section. Did a triple take until I realized what it was. Glad that at least one person appreciates it!

The Hollies 45 definitely exists. A stock copy was posted online. I'm still looking for that one, Pretty Things "Private Sorrow"/"Balloon Burning" on Rare Earth, Big Boy Pete on Amy, Golden Earrings "Chunk of Steel" on General American (that one is not nearly as rare as the others listed here, but sells for a lot of $)

MTM, have you ever seen the Zombies "Time Of The Season" on Date 1604? I've crossed it off my list as never being pressed, as I have for the Untamed on Bell.

I bought a lot more records than this. Rather than make a listing of a bunch of things, I highlighted some that were the most interesting to me. Will post more later

I didn't sniff much this year. Certainly nothing compared to last year and the 3 years before that. I really held back because of the declining Aussie dollar, other responsibilities and projects, and I suppose the lack of anything much interesting on offer. I'm sure I missed plenty of opportunities because I just didn't bother looking.

I'll put up the paltry list soon.

A paltry list from bosshoss would equate to a dream haul for yours truly!

Never saw Date 1604, buckeyebeat...ditto for Parkway 974 (I think) the Blue Rondos. Or Cameo - Parkway 470
the Shags

I got a lot of good stuff this year, but only a little bit of it is worthy of this forum (some people might think none of it worthy)

Australia 45s

Bee Gees – Idea EP. Are they Australian? They were for a while anyway. I always thought Idea was one of their best songs. The German TV video of it is great. But it was never a single, as far as I can tell. I found it on a Thailand bootleg EP

Ronnie Burns – Exit Stage Right (more Bee Gees!)

Singapore 45s

Paul R.T. and The Rocking Skippers EP – includes a good garage original Baby Be Mine and a cool version of Blowing In The Wind. The title track of the EP is a Lefty Frizzell song

Les Kafila’s EP - good

M. Osman + Les Fentones EP – very good

Hong Kong 45s

The Fabulous Echoes EP – includes good versions of Hang On Sloopy and Wooly Bully. They were actually from the Philippines I believe, but were in HK for a long time

The Falcons – two cool instros. I am pretty sure they are from Malaysia, but it was recorded in HK

Indonesia 45s

Tikki, Takki, Suzy and Lies (Dara Puspita). Spanish single that combines two tracks from their two UK singles. Why do people do that? Cool picture sleeve. Not garage, but still good

Indonesia 10 inch LPs

The Singer’s – I posted a few things about this one before. Great

Tri Dara Idali – some good stuff on this one

Elly Kasim + Zaenal Combo – Lansek Maneh. Is it garage? I suppose not, but it rocks hard on some tracks. In a class of its own

Indonesia LPs

Dara Puspita Min Plus – released in Indonesia after they returned from Europe in 1971. Not garage, more like heavy rock, but good

Yanti Bersaudara – Self-titled and Yanti Bersaudara – Anggrek Merah. I’ve get a 10 inch from this three sister singing group as well. The combined singing and spacey instrumentation is pretty close to psych I reckon

Australians think they are, even though they spent much of their later career in America. I don't think you could consider them to be a garage band though: more like anti-garage. That's only because they wrote all their bast songs for other bands, or so it seems to me. Upstairs, Downstairs was probably their greatest garage punker - which they wrote for Jon.

As usual, collecting on a college budget didn't lead to any big-name finds this year. I was able to check off a few items from the want list:

Son's of the Keystone Kops on Public
All Night Workers on Round Sound
Chocolate Watch Band on Decca (Requiem)
Rush Hour on Philips
Noah's Ark on Decca (Love In)
H.P. Lovecraft on Philips (It's All Over For You)
Both Hobbits releases on Decca

Also found a VG++ copy of the Nova Local LP for $20. That's what happens when an inattentive record store owner prices it via Discogs using the repro price. ;)

The News - today today

The only way to blank out this nightmare of a year was via good records. Below’s a top-10-list of new arrivals that proved especially useful in this regard.

But first: a big thank you to BossHoss for another year of impeccable hospitality and incredible generosity here at g45, and to everybody else who adds making this a pleasant, interesting and entertaining hangout. Here’s to a good 2017 for all of us!

1. PLAGUES: Been Through It Before
If asked to name the epitome of all that’s great about 60s garage, there’s nothing that would come quicker to mind than this moody yet stomping Fenton classic. The fuzz, the back-ground „Oooohhhs“, the drums, the scream – everything beams in utter perfection. Most desperately longed for want and happily boxed.

img_0746.jpg

2. DRONES: Down Today
„Down Today“ looked like up to me upon arrival. A long standing contender for most anybody’s moody chart topper, this is not one of the few mint ones around, unfortuntely but still clean enough for me.

img_0747.jpg

3. JACKSON INVESTMENT CO.: What Can I Say
Adorable master jangler that merges Byrds with Love. Some eagle eyed co-collector spotted & claimed the BIN mint copy with photo insert in February, so I have to do without the paperwork.

img_0751.jpg

4. KAN DELLS: I Want You To Know (Bear)
Nice build-up intro to a great garage performance. Glad to find a scarce stock copy.

img_0757.jpg

5. THE CHEQUES: To Stone (Boss Rock)
Boss (garage) rock indeed, and of the much beloved moody variety. This NM-copy took a detour via an Aussie soul collector.

img_0758.jpg

6. ROGUES: Same All Over The World (Peyton) 7”
Outshined by “Going All The Way” today but to me this earlier Squires tune is just as great.

img_0750.jpg

7. STIX & STONZ: Bad News (Pat) 7”
Tuff (musically and rarity wise) FL-mover.

img_0754.jpg

8. TRANS-ATLANTIC SUBWAY: Winter Snow (Lightfood) 7“
Unjustly uncomped New England brooder. Perfect season soundtrack.

img_0748.jpg

9. NOMADS: How Many Times (Stark)
Just like the majority of Garage fiends, I first learned about the Nomads via the Crypt LP. And while „Thoughts...“ was the band’s near unanimous killer on that LP, this low-key number held a special place for me since back then.

img_0752.jpg

10. SKEPTICS
Within mere weeks these two well dressed gentlemen arrived on my doorstep. Will they ever be joined by their Thrush sibling? I’m skeptical.

img_0753.jpg

Also some pivotal NEDERBEAT biggies checked out of the wants list.

I loved all my acquisitions equally, but records with asterixes were more than equal this last year.

I dunno how you all keep track of things. Any record bought more than a month ago is filed somewhere and I have a hard time thinking off the cuff about what I got this year, especially mail records.
Anyways, here's a few more
Chancellors - On Tour
Shilos - Cause I Love You
Java Men - Just Being With You
Untouchables - Don't Go I'm Beggin
Tree - No Good Woman
Fender IV - Mar Gaya
Gentlemen - It's a Cry'n Shame
Zip Codes - Baby Made a Fool Out Of You
+ pictured above

Australian
Phil Jones and Unknown Blues - If I Had a Ticket
Atlantics - Come On

Ricky Hodges - Return Your Love To Me

Sound Masters - Lonely Lonely
Natural Four - Hanging On To A Lie (best in the field bargain at 25 cents, although $2 for the Northern Soul stinker Up and Over by Jay Traynor - quickly flipped - comes close for money value. The N4 was cooler considering the circumstances)

*The Searchers "Crazy dreams" / "Second hand dealer" (Pye)

What a great record. The later Pye era Searchers released some terrific material of which Secondhand Dealer is my favorite. Scoring a UK issue proved maddeningly elusive in the pre - internet days, so I count myself as having been fortunate to acquire Dutch PS issues of this , as well as the majestic I'll Cry Tomorrow and a German Art Sleeve of the bands criminally under-rated / overlooked Liberty debut Umbrella Man as a more than satisfactory non - compromise. BTW there's a fab vid of Umbrella Man up on Youtube.

Jay Traynor = :flush:

Sound Masters is a big fave here. Ditto Masqueraders. Would pony up required $$$ for a copy
I found ten unplayed copies of Sunny & Sunliners on RPR that I sold, kept one for myself.
I'm like you George, I file everything I obtain after a few spins. But from memory, some of my personal fave adds2the collection are:

Dry Ice "Uncertain Love" (Malone)
Great!! Society!! "Someone To Love" (North Beach) stock copy, labels are not reversed like found on many stock copies
Horde "Lost To-Day" (Alvera)
K-Pers "The Red Invasion" (Tiki)
Jolly Roger & Popiteers "Who Is It Gonna Be" (unplayed copy to replace VG copy)
