Another of the great record shops has closed its doors. Rising rents in Greenwich Village has ended what is a true landmark to record collecting in NYC. Make way for another frozen yogurt shop instead.
Along with the the long gone Times Square Records, Bob's will be forever missed. Bob himself is a great guy, contrary to what some may think. I always found him to be a "straight - shooter" who was never afraid to speak his mind. Started of on Bleeker St., then on to McDougal St. and finally to this last location. Bob once asked me to go to work for him in the late 70s, and when I told him if he could land me a place across the street on the stunning Bleeker Alley he said "I've been trying to live there for over 20 years with no luck and I have to get over there first." He was a great fan of Bette Davis and wanted to live in her old flat. Bob always had a great sense of humor & has that rare ability to laugh at himself. He has suffered from bad health for some time now, but has lost none of his wit.
Always sad to see one of the old haunts die off, but I owe it to him for his insight, record knowledge
(I've seen his stuff & it is very extensive) & taking care of my needs for many years.
If you still have a good local shop, support it - they are all fading into memory.
