Figured I'd post the timeline of garage comps (ones that have US bands as the focus) as a historical execrise.....I think I'm pretty much on target here but addtions/corrections are welcome

Nuggets (Elektra issue) - 1972/3
Pebbles 1 (first issue) - 1979
Nuggets (Sire issue) - 1979
Pebbles 1-4 (standard issues) - 1979/80
Boulders 1 - 1980
Pebbles 5-10 - 1980/1
Off The Wall 1 - 1981
Wild Thing - 1981/2
Psychedelic Unknowns 1-3 (7") -1981/2
Texas Flashbacks 1-6 - 1981/2
Boulders 2,3 - 1981
Pennsylvania Unknowns - 1982
Monsters Of The Midwest 1 (cassette) - 1982
Ear Piercing Punk - 1982/3
Chosen Few 1 - spring/summer 1983
New England Teen Scene - summer 1983
Back From The Grave 1 - Fall 1983
Endless Journey - 1983
Oil Stains - 1983
Chosen Few 2 - Winter 1983
Glimpses - 1983/4 (anyone remember these?)
Midwest Vs Rest - 1983/4
Psychotic Moose - 1983(?)
Pebbles 11-14+ - 1983/4
Off The Wall 2 - 1984
Mindrockers - 1984 (maybe even 1983)
Eva label - 1984 (I think the first few were single artists ones)
Highs in the Mid 60s - 1984

The Pebbles LPS were released in groups. 1-4 were first, then 5-10. There was a gap of a few years before the next bunch. I think HITM60s followed shortly after the new bunch of Pebbles. The release timeline was pretty erratic after this.

what about 70s reissue comps of 60s stuff like the San Francisco Roots and Early Chicago l.p.'s....and what is the deal with that midwestern 'Money Music' comp album? another 70s re of 60s stuff questionably worthy of inclusion on the list would be the First Chips l.p. from NY....

Also, you forgot about the Bay State Rock comp from 1980, i'd say, despite that fact that its not essential listening, that should be part of yr list strictly cuz it was fairly influential and also cuz of when it came out, right?

"Root 66 - the Frozen Few" is either late '83 or early '84, best liner notes on any comp, ever...I think Tim Warren might even agree!

Root 66 is late 1983. The "Dirtball Generation" rant on the back cover is still spot on!

I don't have the comp anymore but my friend bought it like I did at the Capitol Record shop in Hartford, Connecticut during the weekly or-bi-weekly trek to buy every "just issued" comp. He wrote the purchase dates on the inner sleeves so I'll check to find out when. He did this for most every purchase. Guess the info has become valid now!

Acid Dreams was one of the first European produced comps I bought, purchased circa 1983. I distinctly recall paying what seemed the way over the top price of $20.00 for it. Sound quality is only so-so, likely owing to the fact of 18 tracks being included. What a scattershot track listing. Minimally half a dozen A+ killers, a few not very tough to find middle level items, plus a bunch of psychy OTT freak out numbers.

The inclusion of "Painted Air" made purchase an imperative, shame the lousy mastering caused the LP to generally begin skipping halfway through the track, unless spun on the dodgiest of turntables, 4+ gram tracking force being just about the minimum required to get my copy to play through. On a Linn!

Side 1 1 White Lightning - William 2 The Caretakers Of Deception - Cuttin' Grass 3 The Outcasts - 1523 Blair 4 The Music Machine - You'll Love Me Again 5 The Mystic Tide - Frustration 6 The Stereo Shoestring - On The Road South 7 The Velvet Illusions - Velvet Illusions 8 The Unrelated Segments - Where You Gonna Go? 9 The Beautiful Daze - City Jungle Part 1 Side 2 1 The Painted Faces - Anxious Color 2 Teddy & His Patches - Suzy Creamcheese 3 The Velvet Illusions - Acid Head 4 The Vejtables - Shadows 5 Faine Jade - It Ain't True 6 The Balloon Farm - A Question Of Temperature 7 The Mind's Eye - Help, I'm Lost! 8 The Zakary Thaks - Can't You Hear Your Daddy's Footsteps 9 The Remaining Few - Painted Air

Echoes In Time vols. 1 & 2 came out in 1983. I actually got a copy of vol. 1 yesterday.

Thanks for the confirmation...yeah Vic Morrow really told it like it was, and maybe still is!

Wow, it's weird but the era I previously thought of as late '70s turns out to be early '80s. Especially Boulders 1, I always thought of that as a late '70s comp, from (my faulty) memory.

I think the real precursor for compilations & certainly the groundbreaker for Elektra's "Nuggets" was the excellent
"What's Shakin'" from 1965 or 1966.

What was the reason for the Pebbles comps doin' other countries other than the American garage scene? I'm a novice when comes to these things?

Ned, my inclusion is based on comps of previously released 45s from a collector perspective. I give you credit for coming up with this....I can't recall the track listing so I need to refresh myself.
My vote for the original garage comp goes to 'Best of the Hideouts'....and it's pretty much all killer! All the other 60s garage comps included mostly unique material.

C. 1986.....the interest in Euro garage by the US neo garage set started around that time.

Mark, Boulders came after Pebbles, and the standard issue Pebbles comps came out in the late summer or fall of 1979. I bought the first one or two Pebbles on either Christmas break 1979 or Easter break 1980, from the Drome record store (yep, the Drome of Pagans fame).

Yeah, I forgot about that one, you're right about late 1983, I bought it at In Your Ear as it had arrived that week....a great comp for sure, I sold mine as well. I don't remember the liner notes at all....One of the few classic comps where I have all the original records.
