I don't know that this is worth a new thread, but I couldn't find a relevant existing one.

Anyways, I recently bought the compilation Australian Rock Heritage Vol. 1. I have always liked the cover art for this LP. It shows a young office dude listening to his transistor radio on a crowded train, much to the ire of the 'adults'. On the back cover it shows him banished to the corridor, leaning out the door as he continues to listen to the cool music, man.

While I find the artwork amusing, part of the attraction for me is nostalgic, because this is obviously a Sydney train, a sort I used to be very well acquainted with. They have not been seen on the rails for about 30-odd years now. What is also funny is that the liner notes, written by Glenn A. Baker, stress that all but two of the artists on the disc are from Melbourne, which he suggests was/is the rock capital of Australia. Very questionable. Anyway, those comments made me do some research on Melbourne trains. Pretty different machines.

And what about the music? There are some great tracks here, but also some pretty dire ones. The comp was made about the same time Baker was putting together the first Ugly Things comp. He probably imagined two different markets. Whatever he was thinking, there never was a Vol. 2. Check out The Go!! Label comps on Canetoad if you want to explore the best of Melbourne.
