Love that classic 2nd e.p. w/Joe and the boys on an "apolitical" trip in a psychedelic soundscape with atmosphere to burn.
"Thing Called Love" channels '65 electric Dylan here, instead of being a straight James Brown pastiche like it was on their
first Vanguard album. The original version of "Bass Strings" was definitely the inspiration for the Dirty Filthy Mud's 45.
When Joe McDonald toured with Barry Melton circa 1979, they managed to still generate "The Vibe" at The Armadillo
World Headquarters in Austin. "Slip Inside This House" by The Thirteenth Floor Elevators was playing on the p.a. between
sets and my old buddy Bill Baxter asked Joe what he thought of it. Joe's comment was: "It sounds like The Byrds ...but it's
out of tune". R.I.P. Joe.
