I've been fooling around with a software plug-in called Bias Pedal. You can get inside the fuzz box and change electronic components and settings to customize the sound in detail. With it I have been able to create exactly the kinds of fuzz tones that are found on a whole range of '60s garage records. Not the usual dull swishy distortion sounds, but some real dirty, dry, choking and sputtering fuzz. It's by far the best solution I have ever found short of collecting vintage original fuzz boxes (which are actually often very disappointing eg. Big Muff and Fuzzface). Just thought I'd put my opinion up here in case anyone is frustrated trying to find a great fuzztone sound.
