Be sure to check out the Thor and the Thundergods 45 with a killer moody garage version of Catch The Wind.
I almost guarantee that 45 will never hit the market again. Been looking for records in Montana for years and have only found 3 copies, this is the first on ebay as the other two I am keeping.

The instrumental side of Thor And The Thundergods is better. Weak version of "Catch The Wind", IMO
It's not mind-blowing, that's for sure, but I do like it..it's about what I'd expect in an unprofessional teenage garage version of Catch the Wind from Montana.

I like how they credit 'Catch The Wind' to Dylan instead of Donovan. Nice job, boys.

I'm in touch with Thor himself. He told me that he has the mastertapes for a handful of Thor & The Thundergod songs but hasn't provided info on titles or anything yet.

Funny, I have a friend who is trying to put together a comp of Montana garage and he has been in touch with Valtron Studios (home of Thor) and they seem to think Thor only recorded the material for this 45. Would love to know what other stuff they have.

Thor (Ron Darlington) only responds to emails very infrequently. If I obtain more information, I'll gladly pass it on. Or send me a PM and I can provide his contact info.

Your friend may have not made it clear but the person who ran Valtron in the 1960s is long dead and his son re-opened the operation after it has closed for a while. He was a teenager (or college student) at the time and his memory for details was pretty sketchy. Its likely that he had no knowledge of other recordings. He had some reels of tape with some interesting notes on which he drew complete blanks. It's possible that there is someone else still around that worked there and remembered better.
I some other Valtron records, the only one that I remember as good is the Missing Lynx. I think I talked about that record on this forum before (maybe the old forum).

Awesome information, thanks. I know my friend was in contact with the dude from 60sgaragebands.com and maybe I got the information wrong. I'm surprised you guys know about Valtron...how did that come about? I'm one of a few diggers here in Montana and have only found a few Valtron records. Thor, A bunch of country, and the Skip Spence LP, from which my avatar is taken.
Is it possible to find that Missing Lynx single or is it really scarce?

The Missing Lynx 45 is pretty rare. The guy at Valtron had the invoice for the Missing Lynx 45. I think I wrote the date down somewhere. There were 200 pressed, of which a couple were defective and were discarded. He didn't remember anything about the band but they have since been found. I cold called on him in 2001 and spent maybe 30-45 minutes there, which was pretty generous of him. Yellowstone also recorded at Valtron, they were hard rock and not garage. I have one or two records by them. That was the one band that he (Valtron guy) remembered somewhat, probably because they were a successful band and recorded a bunch of stuff.
The Initial Shock were way above any other Montana band I can recall.

I thought they just recorded the one 45 on Mile-High (One sunny day)? Were there more 45s? In an interview I read somewhere recently they only mentioned this one and the Invaders 45 from '78 as 45 releases in that period.

You're absolutely right about those other Montana bands. I actually have the Yellowstone 45 & the Initial Shock 45 (missing one of them), which is great. One 45 you didn't mention was The Chosen Few, which is pre-initial shock. It's got a cover version of "Baby Don't Do It" that is really really killer, nearly as good as the initial shock stuff. I actually have an extra copy of that Chosen Few 45 if anyone is interested in a trade?
It can be heard here, on my archived radio show, at the 25 minute mark:

Does anyone have an extra Missing Lynx they could part with?

I don't find the Chosen Few 45 is anywhere near as good as either Initial Shock 45. I'm sure others will agree. "You've Been a Long Time Coming" blows it out of the water; and both sides of the 2nd Initial Shock 45 are superior to the lazy, tepid frat remake of "Baby..."
The Chosen Few BFD label 45 is very common as well (long time $20-20 disc in NM condition for decades), but the picture sleeve is very rare.

No, I'm just trying to be realistic and calm down the "home-based" flag waving. Everyone seems to cheer 'n' hype louder for records in their own backyard - a personal bias slant.

Whenever people post here that they have some "killer rare" disc, said person might not be aware of the "collectible history" of the disc. I read this type of post frequently on other message boards. This is especially true on Facebook, where people inflate asking prices based on misinformation. For example, someone will find a 45 they like, and then hype it especially if search engine or auction results are not found immediately. This is most certainly due to the younger ages of people out there collecting and searching for records, for they are the ones who post such claims. I am only trying to provide a reasonable account regarding a specific 45 when known, based upon 30+ years of collecting experience and networking.

As for "how good" a song is to one's ears, well, that is always open to debate, and we all have the right to offer our own take.

I used to have the Chosen Few as well. Used to be a $15 eBay disc in the early 2000s at least. Did not like it at all. However a popcorn/soulie/whatever friend of mine snapped it up eagerly as soon as he saw I had it. Apparently it is being played out by that crowd (this was perhaps 5 years ago)

Totally understand all these comments and it's hard not to flag-wave for a local 45. In the defense of the chosen few 45, I've played this at some live DJ gigs and it really gets people going..gets them dancing and excited, but maybe that's why it's becoming more popular with the soul crowd. I like it, but yes, it does pale in comparison to lot of other versions of the song and both initial shock 45s. I definitely don't find it to be lazy and tepid, it's got some good energy and it's obvious that the band put some effort into it. I do have the picture sleeve for that one, which is pretty cool. I don't think it's going to be a $20 45 again...Check out this shit from last year: http://collectorsfrenzy.com/Details.aspx?id=320762814453
Maybe that's a fluke, but it seems to get snapped up quickly for $50+ on-line.
Also, if anyone ever has an extra copy of the Initial Shock 45 "long time comin" I'd be pumped to try to trade/buy it from you.
And also again, my friend has a whole bunch of really cool Initial Shock concert/promotional posters that will one day be posted up here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Long-Time-Comin-Lost-sounds-from-the-Treasure-State/100420110074475
Alongside any other montana-related 45s/music/memorabilia.

I thrifted a copy of "long time comin" 20 years ago. Didn't care for it then and still don't. Sold it pretty quick. Plodding. So yeah, opinions run both ways.
