I noticed that my copy of this record does not have a number on the label. Does this mean it's a first pressing? I did not see anything in the dead wax either.

No.
The labels were retouched during the pressing session. That is what happened here
a different, altered label can be easily inserted during a pressing job. Another separate pressing requires the machines to be set up for the job all over again - new stampers, etc.
Collectors seem to use the term "2nd pressing" in error most of the time.

Do you happen to know why they did this? Why would the record # be removed? I was thinking this was a promo copy as there are X's all over it and the comment on the label. I've seen other 45 on the label the record # on the labels. Puzzling to me.
