I had to re-start this thread after a completely bungled and somewhat embarrassing first attempt. I also left out some of the greatest instrumental combos, as some helpful souls pointed out.

Apologies to those who already voted. You're all invited to have another try! In fact, as an experiment I clicked the "allow multiple selections", and the "display votes publicly" options. Who knows what chaos that will create?!

Can anyone beat Link? He is Native American:cool:. He is an hole poking amplifier distorter:D. He produces himself:). He records in a shack:D. He is a power chord god:cool:. ...and that half a lung singing voice;).

My other votes jumped around the globe a little.

Would have voted for The Challengers if there because, somehow, they helped my love of Surf sounds.

i saw dick dale last month. he's turned into a big money grubber. fuck i surprised he does'nt charge money to just look at him. i voted for link. the shadows & tornadoes just sound like european mall music. i should have voted for davie allen & the arrows too

I had to add this.Dick rarely sings and this song is great. My dad had this record when I was a kid and I wore it out. The drummer is nuts....

This is tough because I want to eliminate acts who were 40% or more vocals, like Dick Dale. My heart makes me quickly vote Ventures uber alles as an Englander/Aus would go for the Shads. I might have to concede Dick and Link as more important guitarists, though the Ventures were more universally influential (like Hank Marvin or Dwayne Eddy).

Mentally I might have to write in the Spotnicks as best. And for just cool I start thinking of The Champs, Johnny & the Hurricanes, and The Wailers keeping the real rock alive during those down 'Bobby' years. And how about The Reasons/Nashville West... spinning out now... gotta go drag some records out... :)

That Shadows clip is one and a half minutes but feels like one and a half hours.

Naw man, The Savage rocked, the Ventures even had to cover it, and you get Jet and Tony there! They were puppets on Thunderbirds once too and what's cooler than that? If I could've been a puppet like them it'd be like making them gong me on the original Gong Show; like, life complete!!!!
