Living and relating to 60s garage records

Raven, you surely are right about one thing, by limiting a songs length to the 2 1/2 min. mark demanded the piece be powerpacked for the duration. That restriction, at the time, helped spur the rugged, rough and raw sonds you hear in good "Garage" music. It seems today with a more flexible time allotment, many songs get stretched just to fill the longer times allowed and the songs lose their punch. The "hooks" get lost in the fill-in crap put down for the time, not the overall quality of the music. If people get bored or lose concentration before the song is completed, they will more than likely never listen to it a second time. You gotta grab'em and hold'em. That seems easier to do in a 2 1/2 min. limit. Of course, there are exceptions. But, I personally would rather listen to a shorter ass-kicken couple of minutes than listen to a long, dragged out melody when done all you remember is the song length rather than the songs message.

You nailed this, Tom. Typically if a song reaches the 3:00 mark my eyes are invariably checking the running time on the CD player. Longer does not equal "better" or "more".
