hi guys,
i'd love to get some recommendations for "modern" (1980+) rockabilly. don't mean "ok" or "good" type of stuff, but "fantastic".
here's my shortlist:
#4: THE ZANTEES - Out For Kicks
good, even great, some standout tracks, some ok, good sound overall.
#3: THE AMAZING ROYAL CROWNS - (s/t)
surprised that this one isn't more recognised. great raunchy sound, fab singing, no dumbo clichés, lots of attitude. great overall feel.
#2: THE TREMORS - Invasion Of The Saucermen
they have more records which are ALL good, but this one stands out a bit for me. no-bullshit, sparse, lo-fi. their sound doesn't really change anywhere which might be a weak point, and they pretty much have two types of songs (weirdo-psycho-slow vs. rocking bopper) but simple is good.
#1: THE STRAY CATS: (s/t)
who am i kidding. i have never heard a rockabilly record that's better than this one. yes, they are "mainstream" or whatever, and yes, all the follow up LP's were either nowhere as good or sucked badly, but this here is true gold. 2-3 weaker tracks, the rest is a stone-cold classic.
