There was no shortage of groups named The Shags in the mid-‘60s. There were Shags all across the country. The Shags from New Haven, CT, however, were by far the most well-known, successful and recorded; and they actually hold the registered trademark of the name for performing musical groups. The Shags released 6 singles and left several unreleased tracks. This compilation includes 5 previously-unissued tracks by The Shags, 5 cool bonus tracks -- including 2 songs by PULSE, the band that evolved when The Shags broke up -- and a 16-page booklet with the complete “Story of The Shags”, written by Brent Hopkins, Mike Dugo and Dwayne Witten.

Available on Amazon, eBay, or Discogs.

Looks amazing...Just ordered it on amazon.

Not to be confused with the hideous band from Freemont, NH spelled with two "g's". If you want to clear out a bunch of party stragglers just drop the needle anywhere on "Philosophy Of The World". Yes, they sound as bad as they look.

Two strange omissions. I wonder what the reasoning behind it is.
Most songs were officially licensed from Trod Nossell. Trust me, I asked them how they could have the rights to one side of a 45 but not the other, and they couldn’t provide an explanation. Dwayne Witten, the compiler, didn’t want to risk copyright issues so kept everything on the up and up. Other songs not included have rights outside Trod Nossell and were cost prohibitive to include. Some of these companies want outrageous fees that aren’t worth paying when a release is lucky to sell 300 - 500 copies.

They did not do much research, as "Come Back To Me" was written by, and submitted to copyright by Carl Augusto (Donnell)

The research comment is 100% not true. Carl was part of the release. I didn’t compile the credits, so I don’t know where that info came from.

I’d like to add that this is the type of release we all need to support. It has a full booklet with a nice complete history of the group, several photos, and three songs that have never been available anywhere. Granted, they’re not BFTG type, but if you like what you’ve heard from the Shags, and don’t mind ‘60s pop, you should enjoy them. Releases like this are few and far between.

I did not say I wouldn't support this release.
You cannot solely rely on memories from those involved. Sometimes they need to be reminded of facts by empirical evidence. I have Carl on tape (interview)from 1984 where he mentions a song that he wrote called Come Back To Me. Carl said they recorded it and he considered it one of the group's best songs.
As for the folks at Trod Nossell, let's just say they ran a disorganized library. Sundazed found that out!

Whenever I find the 45 on Fleetwood, I immediately sell it for big bucks. Long live Capitalism and people who love to listen to crap!!!
I'm just glad that is was never included in the New England Teen Scene comps which do include many of the Fleetwood catalog. Most people embrace them as "outsider" music. I hate hipsters.
