It's been a while for a post from me here....new job, family stuff, all the things in life both expected and unexpected that sometimes get in the way of fun things to do.

First, the website for TeenBeat Mayhem is still on hold, looking for an affordable designer. Not impressed at all with the options for a D.I.Y. website.

I have been working for the past few years on a streaming radio station that plays nothing but the songs listed in both of my books, sprinkled with tunes that are not included (mainly LP-only tracks, songs from non U.S. groups, etc.). We've now rated over 18,000 songs from U.S. groups / performers, so that total will eventually comprise the streaming library for TeenBeat Mayhem Radio. I wanted to get the station rolling as soon as I had enough songs recorded directly from my own 45s, so the station will kick off this upcoming weekend. November 12th, Saturday, 9AM EST.

Here is some info - the station can only stream to listeners in the U.S., Canada, and Europe for the time being. The station will be hosted by Live 365. They are the only stream host available to include a no hassle / no paperwork required licensing package in their service. It is covered in the monthly operational cost. Live 365 states they are working on licensing to other countries like Australia, Japan, and Mexico to name a few.

The stream quality package is the only option for streaming with Live 365, 128 kbps. Of course, this cannot hope to match the sonic expectations of most of the G45 crowd, but for those who would like to have a streaming option playing your kind of music while you are doing something else, well, TBM Radio might be your option. I've worked hard to optimize the on-stream sound, having run test streams over the past month. The stream is in mono as well. All of my transfers are done analog, direct from the original 45 to disc, without any tweaking or added sonic restortation. I want to have the songs play as if you were at my place and we randomly selected songs from my collection. As I have at least 80% of all titles listed in both books, the transfer job is an on-going process. That is the reason TBM radio will just stream on weekends until further notice.

Start time is 9AM EST Saturdays, then going all weekend til around 9PM EST Sunday night. There are no commercials (well, at least until I get successful, ha!) and the stream is totally automated - no talking DJ or specialty programs. I do have voiced station IDs and promos that drop in between songs here and there. But the entire playlist streams fully automated, with the song selection based solely upon the TBM song rating by the algorithm I created. A song rated "1" is rarely selected. In the first 100 hours of playlists, only 5 songs rated "1" were selected. A "2" rated song was selected approximately 53 times. The bulk of selections per hour are songs rated 3 and higher. Once the bulk of the library has been transferred to digital, songs that are rated higher will be selected slightly more often than the lower rated songs, with a cap to protect against too many repeated plays per weekend session. The meta data tags are complete and differ from the normal / standardized tag categories. I wanted to include as much info as I could squeeze in, so you will see the decimal song rating next to the songtitle, the label and release number in the "album" meta tag, the location in the genre tag (60sGarage_TX) for a Texas state location. what you see will depend on the device you use to hear the TBM Radio stream. I have no control over the display, other than what appears on the TeenBeat Mayhem Radio Live 365 webpage. The people who listened to my test streams reported various results for the meta data display using their phone, tablet as compared to a computer or laptop.

The webpage is offline now, but will be up and running by Thursday. Hope those of you who can will tune in at some point.
This should be the link:

TeenBeat Mayhem Radio is on the air - had a 45 second disconnect in the 1st hour but things are rolling along.
If a disconnect occurs, just refresh your listening page or browser as the stream originates from me, not from the cloud.
The stream runs til Sunday night at 9PM EST. And every weekend thereafter. Getting good feedback so far!

Hello Mike,
An honorable and salutary effort on your part :tiphat:alas I got the message "not available in your country".

Regards Jim

I'm using US VPN (i'm from Russia). So far everything sounds fantastic and i already heard many killer songs!

Thanks for the great job, Mike!

I listened in the car while running some errands earlier today. It sounds fantastic! Thanks for putting this together Mike!

Thanks Mike. Sounds great.

One tiny irk. The band names are not coming up while playing but does appear later in the Last Played section. Year Song title, label and TBM grade are visible though.

OK back to my favourite radio station.

Edit - Actually if you pause the song when playing the band name appears. Then goes away when you press play.

Just heard Dion "Spoonful" on the radio.. actually wondered who the hell is that good. Rated 4.8. I checked my main book and there's nothing about Dion here. I don't have second supplement. Is he mentioned there?

And just now having an opportunity to hear the sign-off, fab gear man! A weekend well spent.

Thanks Mike. Sounds great.

Yes I was wondering about that issue also, but enjoyed the stream. I heard many songs that I haven't before as well.

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate them, and suggestions as well.
I had a few glitches, including a HUGE averted disaster during the last hour (damn you to hell Bill Gates and your moronic windows OS)....disconnect dropouts are expected from time to time due to streaming direct from my laptop to Live 365. The software reconnects immediately, but listeners have to refresh their connection in such instances. But overall, people seemed to like the sound quality and the randomness of song selections.

Sorry to say that Live 365 only covers streaming licenses to listeners located in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. They do say they are working toward license arrangements for other countries. There are other hosting services that stream worldwide, but then I would have to incur huge costs (as much as 10 grand per year) to cover licenses for copyright & royalties (both publishing AND performance rights). Even if I ran advertisements, it would not cover these high yearly fees. Plus the paperwork I would have to collate then submit every thirty days. Cannot be bothered.

We will be streaming weekends only - 9AM Saturday til 9PM Sunday, EST, for the time being. I have a few concepts planned in the coming weeks which I'll announce here. Don't need to tell you it is a lot of work recording from the original 45s and then tagging them accordingly. i do not do any audio restoration; that is why some tunes play with a bit of surface noise, etc. I try to reject anything that is a bit too noisy, with the exception of acetates, or course. I told a few buddies the station is like having people hanging out at my place while we blast randomly selected 45s - minus the people hanging out! The stream output is shaped by the audio chain, I wanted to make it sound "hot" like top 40 AM radio stations in the 1960s and early 70s. i still need to refine a few elements, working on that during the week. You can only do so much with a 128 kbps mp3, even if it is mono.

As for the meta data showing up on the Live 365 page - everything appears correctly on my end - a tablet and my phone, when connected as a listener to the TeenBeat Mayhem Radio page displays the current playing track correctly - the group name on top, then underneath, the title/song rating, record label and release number, year and location (combined with the required genre tag Live 365 needs for royalty data...I can't list garage by itself, as that would send them scurrying for modern dance music data. Some listeners had the year show as the top line in the current playing track. I cannot troubleshoot this on my end, it is some glitch with Live 365 reading your own system's browser and OS.

When I get approved and added to an app service (Getmeradio), listeners can connect to the TeenBeat Mayhem Radio stream via other devices, should they choose.

Call me an old thicko if you must, but is it possible to listen back to the show if you missed it ?

No, just tune in at some point every weekend. You are sure to hear unfamiliar songs.
The radio station stream runs automated....there are no "shows" or DJ talking. There are more than enough DJ shows and programs out there already. I let the music do all the talking. I have been discussing airing some 60s garage podcasts for a couple of hours, just one programming aspect in the future pipeline should things go well.
