Upon hearing both sides of The Higher State's new album just once all I can say is WOW. Not only do the -now- duo's sonwriting skills remain intact record after record but they avoid clichés and sound the way The Higher State HAVE TO sound; they seem self-assured, willing and able to write songs like very few do in often discouraging times musicwise, conjuring up melodies from the past and, at the same time, having an eye on today, just check out their incisive, sound, precise lyrics. Note the LP consists of 12 original songs, not a single cover, which adds to the merit of a mostly DIY product -or so I guess...-.
Yours truly is really looking forward to listening to Paul Messis's forthcoming records, whether they be his solo projects or with The Suburban Homes, a man of many talents indeed!

Paco,

that's a really damn great review we've got, thanks so much, I'm gonna send this over to Marty.

As for my solo work, we're now underway with LP number 3, which is currently being called Songs Of The Times, we've already cut the backing tracks for 6 tracks and thus far there is a couple of punkers and my usual form of jangle folk-rock, one track has a very garage-rooted Buddy Holly vibe which I've really dug.... Marty told me one of the songs has a Monkees sound to it, which is cool I guess.

Side two which I will begin recording in the autumn will have a couple of my most psychedelic styled tracks, one in particular is gonna be like a 6 minute song, with plenty of 12 string, guitar feedback and organ, may even use Theremin on it too, plus it will have a couple of my usual folk-punkers and a real moody minor key beast.

The Suburban Homes currently have two records in the pressing plant (one 12" (total punk) and one 7" (in the red) ) - they should both be out between now and October I reckon.

there are a few things in the pipeline, i.e we may try and do a 45 with my girlfriend, making a real Newcastle 5 style a-side and a Lyn and the Invaders styled b-side.... obviously this will be quite a way off.

Also doing some Velvets influenced stuff with my girlfriend and friends of ours too.

Some strange releases planned for Market Square too.... one of which will be another Higher State 45.

Thanks for kick-ass review Paco.

Paul
