Due 24/09...Los Angeles band the Seeds stand prominent amongst the handful of mid-60s garage bands whose influence is palpable in rock to this day. Led by charismatic frontman Sky Saxon, their unique brand of exciting, minimalist rock’n’roll has stayed contemporary. The minor chart statistic of the group’s two original US hit singles ‘Can’t Seem To Make You Mine’ and ‘Pushin’ Too Hard’ belies the fact that the Seeds’ music is known and enjoyed the world over.
The Seeds’ catalogue has been in major need of an overhaul for decades, and now with this spectacular repackage of their debut album, the campaign to reinstate the Seeds long-players to their rightful glory begins. 1966’s “The Seeds” is a fan favourite, featuring both hits, and sundry other staples of their repertoire such as ‘No Escape’, ‘Girl I Want You’ and ‘Nobody Spoil My Fun’. The record still represents the band at their edgiest and most focused.
This deluxe reissue of “The Seeds” boasts the superlative, punchy mono mix, along with ten bonus tracks – eight of which are previously unissued – doubling the length of the original album. These include the unedited take of ‘Evil Hoodoo’, the unreleased ‘Dreaming Of Your Love’ and early versions of the classic B-sides ‘Daisy Mae’ and ‘Out Of The Question’. The 40-page, heavily illustrated booklet examines the Seeds’ early career in real detail, based on fresh research and interviews with the surviving participants.
Compilation and sleeve note by Alec Palao and is presented as a foldout digipak with a deluxe booklet.

Glad to see that they are finally reissuing this stuff in mono. I guess it's a matter of taste but I for one almost always prefer mono over stereo when it comes to reissues of 60s garage records. Mono is just so much punchier.

But Sky's Liquidified Stereoized Disorientating panning is so much more trippier. It was how it was meant to be. Sky embraced technology, his investment in the ridiculous idea of 8-Track as the future of recording!! Sky never called for a return to thee 78rpm of olden daze, looking for a punchier sound.... So why Monoify his sick dream of standing next to you and whispering in your left ear "drop some acid, kids" will be lost in the straight ahead world!!

A matter of taste true.... I for one love that drugged up stereo feeling eeeccchhhooooowwwwing through my synapses.

At least for the first LP, I think the MONO mix wipes the floor with the Stereo, the latter which exposes the <cough> minimalistic aesthetics of Sky and his brethren in a too blatant way... sort of like putting a nice picture in an ugly frame. It's funny to realize that of all the Seeds fans out there, 90% have never heard the first album in the superior mix. Same deal as with the first Elevators, though that is being corrected.

Can't comment on Web Of Sound, but I picked up the MONO of "Future" and was surprised to find a radically different mix on some tracks... I played this for Sir Maggot and he picked the differences up right away... not saying the mono "Future" is necessarily better than the stereo, but it could be...

Re-channeled stereo is a bummer, man. The mono mix is the band-approved mix for the first LP. And "Tripmaker" sounds like total dogshit in stereo (even if it is 'true' stereo in that case). About the only early Seeds stereo mixes that I really enjoy are "Nobody Spoil My Fun" and "Pictures And Designs". Now THOSE are some trippy mixes...

Used to, in my youth, travel to Birmingham, UK and buy some garage/acid/punk albums drop my Lsd on the train ride home. By the time I was coming up strong I had made it home and plopping the stylus on some glowing black rubbery wax, volume set upon 9.7 (had to factor in the butcher and pharmacist trading under my flat), optikenetic lights pulsing on the walls (yes, a weekly club my friends and I ran found 3 in the early 80's (we loved those fuckers)), so some of these Seeds albums I heard first while royally tripping (Web Of Sound and Future). I guess my altered state hindered my listening powers and etched these stereo mixes into my subconscious.

The Seeds and Sky became my psychedelic guides many times always made me feel warm and cosy in their sickly world. Giggling at the playground fairy story introduction on Future, the anticipation waiting for a scary roller coaster ride, the falling piano eventually hits the ground exploding into a million splinters leaves me gobsmacked and drooling still..... What just happened? ....again, again.... a.... gain...

I don't understand your point. Some of the best psychedelic songs were only released in mono and are plenty trippy that way ("Thoughts Of A Madman" for example). Some suffer greatly in the awful 60s stereo mixes of the time like "Psychedelic Sounds" by the Thirteenth Floor Elevators. Stereo mixing can enhance the psychedelic experience...or work against it, depending on the quality of the mix itself and the direct involvement of the artist in the mixing process. Nostalgia for bad stereo mixes does not make them 'more' psychedelic...just more personally psycholytic and nostalgic for the individual who 'grew up on them'.

"Thoughts of a Madman" under the wrong conditions can be harmful to the mind - the singer is encouraging one to kill oneself. Love the song so much but it helped pummel me into my weirdest trip.

I can't argue what is the best Stereo vs Mono. Both have their pros and cons. and I don't have the cash to find out. I love mONo ....And I have used the worst vintage equipment ever to play music on forcing stereo mixes out of one valve driven speaker....

On drugs Slipping and Sliding by Buddy Holly is a pinnacle of mono psyche, he must have took peyote, right??? but for the seedS, my warped mind, those stereo mixes, the volume and the lights were gobsmackingly brilliant.

Can't believe I am defending Stereo... I hate stereo.

Sky Saxon’s disaffected anthem ‘Pushin’ Too Hard’ is familiar to even the most casual pop-picker, having been heard most recently on a Nike TV ad during the Olympics. But even the most die-hard Seeds fan will not have the full-length take featured on this limited single. It features the missing verse edited out of the final mix that became a US hit in late 1966. Note: this version of ‘Pushin’ Too Hard’ is not included on our deluxe version of the band’s first album “The Seeds” (CDWIKD 308): it is only available on this 7-inch.
Accompanying this prize rarity is a stupendous alternate version of one of the Seeds’ most punkoid moments. ‘Girl I Want You’ is one of the highlights from “The Seeds”, yet as wild as the album cut is, this take, with harmonica and a rawer, completely different vocal, takes it to a new level. Dig Sky’s lengthy rap during the final rave-up, where he blurts out the phone number to his Glendale rooming house, with a promise to “take you so high, right over purple clouds up above”.
