Vinyl prices headed north (at least in the great white north)

$41 retail for an LP is not a good price point IMO !

That means a wholesale cost to small shops of about $20-$25, which is the cost of Record Store Day releases. Shops are willing to shell out for those because of the hype that brings people into the store. But many Record Store Day issues sit unsold for years, others get returned to the shop for warps & bad pressings. It's not a great deal for the small retailers.

There are tons of reissues that retail for $25-$30 and young people are willing to pay that much. But $40 plus tax? I think the sales would drop off for all but the most coveted new releases.

I work in a shop part-time, and bought the recent Record Store Day 2LP issue of Captain Beefheart's Clear Spot for wholesale cost, close to $30. It was retailing for around $50! Luckily they made so many of them, you can find sealed copies on Discogs for $30 now, and I recommend it if you like that album.
