You know how cool the What's New French EP is... especially the comped "Up So High". Every blurb about these guys... either on a blog, or in an eBay listing... states as fact the band's origins in Orlando, Florida.

I have just one thing to say:

PROVE IT.

Yes, it's been written that the band was discovered at Disneyland, and brought to France to record. There's just one problem: Disneyland is in California, not Florida! In fact, there WAS no Disney World until the early '70s.

So is there any other "evidence" that this was a Florida band? Certainly not group leader Colin Scot's British recording career. Where IS this evidence? If it exists, I'll shut my mouth, but I just get the feeling this is another one of those internet "truths" that everyone believes, just because someone put it up on a page somewhere.
 
The copyright certificates filed for "Up So High", "Get Away" and others was classified as an EFO number, which identifies a non US residing claimant. Colin Scott was listed and resided in France. However, I can't recall if the box on the certificate was checked (where it asks if the claimant is a US born citizen. I can check this out as I'm going to DC on the 19th.

I don't have the What's New EP but I believe the blurb written on the back of the cardboard jacket stated the "discovered in Florida, brought over to France" connection. That doesn't mean it is what really happened!
 
Thanks Mike. I have the EP with "Up So High" but no pic sleeve. I've been told it states they were discovered at Disneyland, and brought over to France. Does anyone here have the sleeve? What exactly does it say?
 
Don't believe what the French say. Back then, it was also reported that The Beatles might serve as the backing band for Sylvie Vartan. The Disneyland thing is probably bullshit.
 
I have the sleeve but it is in French. this is on it about Disneyland, Octobre 1965: Line RENAUD, en viste a "Disneyland" est tres impressionnee de voir ce Groupe chanter devant plus de 3000 jeunes Americans. There is more as it goes from Oct.65 to Nov. 66, such as, Janvier 1966: Tous les quatre arrivent a Paris, afin de commencer les repetitions. Hope someone from France will tell what it says.

Line Renaud (a famous French rock&roll singer) saw the band performing in front of 3.000 American teenagers at Disneyland and was much impressed. All the guys arrived in Paris and start rehearse together.
 
They did indeed come from Disneyland, where they performed as the Yatchsmen. Colin Scot came out of a duo called Bud & Scotty that performed at Coke Corner in Disneyland. The What's New moniker was adopted for their French performances. I have a story to run at Bedazzled - Spike's unearthed clips of the band on French TV.

Can anyone provide good scans of their two French EPs?

Thanks Chris. Since Disneyland is in California, not Florida, I hope we can start to put an end to the misinformation that's been passed down and copied so many times.

I tried to contact one of the surviving band members but haven't heard back. I did speak to Colin Scot's duo partner, who provided the neat b&w old timey photo. Here's the story from what I know so far, and it also happens to be my first post on Bedazzled. Spike found some great French TV clips of the band. 'Get Away' is lip synched, of course, but I like how the camera pans across so you can see their guitars.

The clip for 'Early Morning Rain' (Live) however, doesn't have any video. Could you let us know when that's been corrected?
