There is a grey area CD of their stuff that is likely a CD-R but supposedly this is direct from master tapes stereo (so they say) which would make me believe that it's legit.

THIS IS A CD-R. Don't know if it's legit or not. Just because you own tapes doesn't mean it's legit.

I've made 1000s of cd-rs over the years and most of the ones from 10 years or more ago are defective. that's why I never buy cd-rs anymore. You can get cds pressed for like a buck a piece so it's b.s. for these guys not to press the real deal. I found a brand of jvc cdrs that are much better and cost about $1 that are suppossed to last forever. I'll let you guys know in a few decades if this is true. Make sure when burning cdrs to make a disc image 1st and never put labels on the discs. And do not buy the silver discs. Jvc makes a special brand that are a matt white and are awesome.

Interesting, I've got CDs I made over 15 years ago that still play fine. But yeah, if I am paying money, I don't want a CD-R.

There are many CD packages offered out in the wild that are nothing more than duplicated CD-R discs.
I recently purchased something but immediately sent it back for a full refund. Charge me like $18 for something that costs $2. No chance.
I need to get another CD recorder myself as the unit no longer recognizes music CD-R recordable blanks. Doesn't matter which manufacturer, they all fail. Probably because the manufactures are creating shoddy product.
I also have a few older CD-R discs containing 45s recorded by other collectors and sent to me for the TBM rating project. I must have at least 200 of them. At random selection, 5 of these so far will no longer read in any CD machine, not even the laptops. Good thing I backed up everything on a storage drive.

Anybody who is expecting garage rock on these CDs will be sorely disappointed, its mostly soft pop with a folkie element like Chad & Jeremy with a few uptempo teen rockers thrown in. Not bad with a few total stinkers also. For garage and psych heads, the choicest stuff is all on the Norman Petty comps Alec Palao already did on Big Beat, especially Now Hear This and Get Ready To Fly. Alec was the first to get into the Petty vaults and uncover this unknown aspect of the stuff from the studio, as 60s rock always seemed to be of little interest to Fireballs and String-A-Longs fans. I helped track down some of the bands for their stories. He tells me he has plenty of unreleased material so watch for another volume soon.

I've been happy with the non CD-R releases from Super Oldies, but yeah, not too much of interest garage-wise, more for Canadian completists and Norman Petty Studios fans.
I have one full spindle of those plain JVCs that the Tascam burner loves and I'm going to have to break that open soon, they are like gold! I have some of the really old Fujis made in Japan that still play great, from like twenty years ago now? They seem to have had it right back then when things were 2x, 4x and 8x, but sometime after that they started going cheap, can't believe how crappy something branded 'Onn' are (not my choice).
