2012 year end roundup - records, etc you got in the past year

.

Is this a loud pressing? I've been wanting to pick one up for years, though the few times it has been offered the condition have been around the VG mark and I have opted to sit it out. Something about how it sounded on the Wyld Canada set made me think it needed to be a VG++ to warrant a purchase.

I remember it as not the most dynamic sounding record but will spin again tonight and report back, if nobody else will come to rescue earlier.

Green Fuzz? Black Diamonds? Wow, others seem to have found some great stuff in 2012! A slower year for me, but I did manage to score some cool LPs (including garage discs by The Stowaways, The Rousers and the "12 Groovy Hits, 12 Florida Bands") and the following 7-inchers:
The Bumpers - Cupidation (Italian Ariel - beat)
The Chymes - He's Not There Anymore (Chattahoochee)
Cinderella - From Town To Town (Dutch Imperial - floating progressive; a longtime want)
The Felicity - Hurtin' (Wilson)
Milan (The Leather Boy) - You Gotta Have Soul (Flower - anyone have his Parkway 45 to turn loose?)
Mod East - Angelita (Hong Kong Diamond - among my top 10 wants for close to a decade; A-side is so-so beat-pop one would expect of the era/locale, the flip is the greatest recording ever made in Asia)
Morning Dew - Go Away (Fairyland)
The Poets - Call Again (U.K. Immediate - think this completes my collection of them)
The Rhythms - Everytime + 3 E.P. (Dutch Autogram - garage/beat)
St Giles System - Swedish Tears (Belgian Philips - another Dutch group, catchy progressive)
Swamp Rats - Psycho (St. Clair)
The Triumphs - Lovin' Cup (Genuine - not a bad copy, but I could still use a cleaner one...)
We The People - When I Arrive (RCA)

the "problem" seems to be less the volume but more the mastering/mix: it's very midrang-y and given the tumultuous nature of both sides the instruments start to blurr into each other. might be my less-than-stellar stereo but it certainly sounds less lively than a lot of other 45s.

It sounds amazing - but as gregk25 says, tumultuous, dense and reverberant. I think a nice condition copy would be essential. I used to have a g minus (I think it was even cracked), but upgraded to a stone mint ebay copy for $500 about 5 years ago. No regrets, to say the least.

I think I would have to say, that I get the most G45 satisfaction from upgrading from a trashed copy (especially if the labels are also trashed) to a perfect mint copy. More so even than finding a long-time want.

2012
Pretty good year for records. I was able to find some big regional wants that do not pop up on ebay or set sales often or in some cases ever (Jan Moore, Motifs, Chevelle V, EKOS, Tommy & Terry) and I knocked off some less tough wants via eBay and even found a few complete surprises. I was also able to dug up a couple of records I’ve loved for 20 years, but just never figured I would have the opportunity to own. Anyhow... standouts…

BOBBY COLLINS – After Laughter Came Tears (Enterprise 1183) Nice, hard edged south east Texas honky tonk that I found on the cheap in ABQ, NM. Good stuff with a bit of Starday sound to it.

DAVE DUDLEY – Mad (Mercury 72308) I actually dug this out of a a big box of 45s my neighbor left on my porch on New Years day making it my first find of the year. GREAT 60s country rocker.

WARREN MILLER – Everybody’s Got A Baby But Me (United Artists 104) Slick rockabilly pounder grabbed at an estate sale.

DEAN SANFORD – I’m Too Young To Grow Old Over You (Country Capers 1150) Fun country 45 from Gary Paxton with one of my favorite lines of the year: “I think I’ll go and build myself a girl machine and stop missing you the way I do”. Listened to this record a TON.

THE ROYALS – Work With Me Annie (Federal 12169) Often turns up as the Midnighters, but I’ve never seen the original by the Royals… not out here anyway. What a classic.

HOWLIN’ WOLF – My Life (Chess 1648)

RAY JOHNSON – Blue Congo (RCA Victor 7573) Nifty vocal exotica.

ELWOOD JAMES – Arkansas Jane (Bonanza 3456) Early Bo Diddley styled beat from country songwriter Dallas Frazier.

Hot Dog.JPG
BUCK OWENS – Right After the Dance (Pep 106); It Don’t Show On Me(Pep 105) Hot Dog b/w Rhythm & Booze (Pep 107); Hot Dog (New Star 6418) There’s only one spot in this town that kinda regularly picks up records anymore and this year they came into a few really, really great collections. Like the afternoon I found a metal 45 rpm carrier with a 1/3 of the releases on the Bakersfield Pep label, the Lost Chords record below, and a KILLER west Texas should record. I remember looking through one Pep 45 after another- amazing enough right there- wondering if the Buck Owens records would turn up and sure enough... Pep 105 is a damned good country two-sider. And then to find Buck’s rockabilly record as Corky Jones... dear god what a moment. Killer, killer record and a favorite from my days as a wee rockabilly lad. And then the updated “Hot Dog” on New Star? Just amazing. Still can’t get over that little stretch of digging.

KENNY BROWN – Throw A Little Wood On the Fire b/w Crazy Arms (PEP 102) Fine uptempo west coast hillbilly found alongside the Buck Owens and it's b/w the original waxing of "Crazy Arms", pre- Ray Price hit.

THE AMBASSADORS – I Wonder Why (Reel 117) Raggedy r&b from Detroit.

VAL MARTINEZ – Someone’s Gonna Cry (RCA Victor 8140) Cool popcorn latin thing.

DANNY PENNY – Stop Calling Me Baby (United Artists 508) Cool and moody soul that was sitting right behind the Val Martinez above.

Four Sounds.jpg
THE FOUR SOUNDS – Mama Ubangi Bangi (Ran-Dee 104) Cool jungle r&b rocker.

BABY WASHINGTON – That’s How Heartaches Are Made (Sue ) Only played this record like a zillion times this year. Just so damned good.

EARL GRANT – Hide Nor Hair (Decca 32093) Was aware that Earl had a nice little soul record so I usually give his records a quick look when I see them. 25 cents.

Debonairs Soul Click.JPG
THE DEBONAIRS – Please Come Back Baby (Soul Click 6097) Scarce and raggedy Dallas soul record. One of just a handful of records that I sold this year.

GENE MCDANIELS—Walk Like A Winner (Hickory ) Been hoping to find this record – as well’s as Gene’s “Lonely Town”—for some time. Great toon I figured would eventually come up wild and it finally did. Last notable record “find” of the year.

EARL COSBY – Ooh Honey Baby (Mira 204) Storming soul pulled from a local estate sale. Sooooo good.

SONNY ACE & THE TWISTERS – Stand By Love (Cobra 1113) Funny soulish thing. Really dig it.

photo-7.JPG
RICK’S CONTINENTALS – I Don’t Know (Rap 103) Uncomped and scarce garage record outta Mississippi. Lucky grab in a cheap B.I.N. 45 lot. Cool record, but missing a break.

Lost Chords.JPG
THE LOST CHORDS – I Don’t Have to Worry b/w I Want To Be Her Man (Vaughn—Ltd. 725) Nice folky rockers outta Alabama.

NEW WAVE – Not From You (Canterbury 503) One of the last 45s I bought from Al at the flea market before he passed away. Great moody, folk record that feels like a lopsided wheel spinning slowly.

photo-11.JPG
THE ROLLING STONES – Stoned (London 9641) Scarce promo pulled for 50 cents from a local thrift I go to once a year.

ATTILA – When (Attila 003) Random find in a local music teacher/hi-fi buffs estate sale otherwise full of bad late 70s jazzlitefunkesque lps. Hard fuzzer from ’68 or so. Traded it to Seggie for a copy of TeenBeatMayhem.

CHELO VASQUEZ – The Preacher (GC 1017) Cool chicano jazz funk record outta San Antonio, but I got it outta Albuquerque at the excellent We Buy Music.

BRETHREN – Happy Feeling b/w Can This Be Real (Teen Town 124) Rare that the local thrifts actually have decent records anymore, but I found this at a local Catholic Charities back in the spring. I was expecting a hard rock thing, but it wound up being a nice soul record. Early 70s.

78 and LP finds....

78s… not too shabby a year, with a nice bunch hitting right before Thanksgiving.
Roscoe Gordon.jpg
ROSCO GORDON – Love For You Baby (Flip 231) Found with the Motifs, Pep 45s, and Lost Chords.

LITTLE WALTER – Teenage Beat (Checker 845) Swell rockin’ blues instro.

BILLY BRIGGS -- Pretty Baby Boogie (Time 108) and Midnite Dreams (Imperial 8123) Don Julio Blanco intro’d me to Billy Briggs maybe 13 years back via a cd-r he put together. Midnite Dreams was not on that one, but Pretty Baby Boogie was and it’s easily one of my favorite numbers by this Amarillo steel playin’ vocalizer. Both came from estate sales.

Miller Sisterns.jpg
MILLER SISTERS – Someday You Will Pay (Flip 504) Wow. Just wow. Walked into my favorite local spot late one eve and found a new box of 78s. Dream record right here that takes me back almost 20 years to when I was first getting in to rockabilly records. Lots of good 78s came from that pile by some great hillbilly artists (Onie Wheeler, Johnny Hicks, Terry Fell, Gene Tabor and Leon Payne on Starday, the Tunesmiths, Roy Hogsed) but this was the standout.

ROY HOGSHED - Ain't A Bump In the Road (Capitol) Outstanding hillbilly jiver.

WAYNE JOHNSTON AND THE BOYS – A ‘ Pickin’ and A’ Singin’ (Bonnie Blue 1001) Long time regional want.

jackie brenston.jpg
JACKIE BRENSTON AND HIS DELTA CATS – Juiced (Chess 1472) Amazing record.

MARVIN PHILLIPS AND HIS MEN FROM MARS – Wine Woogie (Specialty 445) Great jiver.

LPs
EMITT RHODES – Emitt Rhodes (Dunhill 50089) Not necessarily in the scope of this board, but I grabbed this on a whim in a north New Mexico flea market and listen to it at least once a week. Great Beatles inspired pop.

photo-2.JPG
THE BOBBY FULLER FOUR – KRLA King of the Wheels (Mustang 900) Let Her Dance? YES! Never To Be Forgotten? YEEESSS! Saturday Night? Lord YES! Great lp. 30 cent north New Mexico thrift find.

THE DE-FENDERS – Drag Beat (Del-Fi 1242), THE SURF TEENS – Surf Mania with… (Sutton 339), THE WAILERS – Tall Cool One (Imperial 9262) Over the past 15 years of Odessa livin’ I probably visited my man Al at the VFW Flea Market a few 100 times. I didn’t always buy something, but it’s the first place in town I found records, so it was always a stop for me. Al died this past year and these were three of the last records I bought from him.

photo29j.jpg
RUSS GARCIA, HIS VOCAL CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA – Sounds in the Night (Aamco 309) Super neato vocal jazz/exotica… kinda makes me feel like I’m floating through the stratosphere while watching the cool parts of the 1950s slide by below.

Lastly... local rekkids.

“Local”
Jan Moore.jpg
JAN MOORE – Play It Cool (Winston 1035) Knee jarring rocker from a local 15 year old gal. MAJOR want grabbed from my favorite local shop.

GENE MORRIS – If You Were My Love (Winston 1046) Thumping ‘billy with a pop edge.

ELROY DIETZEL – Teenage Ball (Bo-Kay 101) Actually a freebie from a 78 guy which I then passed on to a fellow Texas collector.

LOU WALKER – Rock and Roll (Tennessee Style) (Starday 657) Amarillo country boy rocks and rolls. Cheap ebay grab.

HAL GOODSON AND THE RAIDERS – Later Baby (Solo 108) Last year I scored a few records out of a K-I-L-L-E-R collection that was FULL of great local records like Ken Cook on Phillips and Orville Fox on Ellis. I had passed over this Lubbock popabilly disc a few times while digging through the ever dwindling remnants of the collection and finally grabbed it.

DAVID TAYLOR – Honky Tonk Music (Belle 103) Blind B.I.N on ebay for cheap because it was unknown number on a west Texas label known for being out of sync with the then current trends within the country and western music field. Here it is 1967 and most of the artists on the label were playing like they had just heard “Folsom Prison Blues” for the first time yesterday. This particular record is a hard edged country bopper. Big surprise and I tracked one of the producers so possibly more surprises in store.

Bill Mack Long Long Train.jpg
BILL MACK – Long, Long Train (Starday 418 ) Rockabilly collectors get all hot bothered for this side and I can’t figure out why as it’s not a rockabilly song. The slow and moody flips is where it’s at. God… Bill could really read a weeper.

JOE MELSON – Oh Yeah (Hickory 1121) Picked this up in a trade with my neighbor. Fine Midland rocker from Roy O’s songwriting partner.

THE MISTERS – Hey Senorita (Acetate) Early 60s doo wop from Odessa that was cut in Memphis. Given to me as a gift by a blog reader who picked it up at an estate sale down the street from me when he happened to be in town. In addition to the two numbers here there were two additional songs cut to acetate at this session.

BILLY DEE AND THE DEBONAIRES – Moon Maid (Le Cam 127) Neato Odessa record with my neighbor playing trumpet. He also plays on the next record.

Eddie Williams.jpg
EDDIE WILLIAMS – You Left Your Happiness (Coronado 112) Since first finding out about this one a few years back I’ve been hot for it. Eddie seems to have been a west coast guy who somehow wound up recording here in Odessa for this release. Nice R&B. Easy record to find online, but I wasn’t keen on paying normal internet rates. Scored a clean copy off an Aussie for a hair over $20. Can’t beat that. Great record.

BLONDIE CALDERON W/ BILLY WHITE – La Gallina (Amistad 101) Cool bordertown TexMex guitar rocker.

photo25p.jpg
THE MOTIFS – Baby You Got It (Galactic 1003) Tuff Chicano soul with James Brown vibes from a tiny cowtown on the Texas/OK border. So good. Tight rhythm. Flip is a great slowie. Not super well known, but I’d say it’s easily one of the top 5 Texas Chicano 2-siders. Forum member ontheroadsouth had actually chased down the label owner (dead) and the group and found no records so it was figured a copy would have to be picked up at the rather big market price eventually. I remember taking my Buck Owens and Lost Chords 45s to check out and was directed to a box of new 45 arrivals. There in the last handful of 80s top 40 and 70s country was this lone 60s era release. It was truly an “Oh shit” moment. Five minutes later I was in the car sending ontheroadsouth a text/picture of the 45 sitting in the passenger seat to rub it in. Favorite find of the year? Easily.

galacatic.jpg
THE TIGER BOYS – I’m A Tiger b/w I’ve Been Kissed By An Angel (Galactic 1002) Upgraded to unplayed vinyl courtesy JC. Can’t figure out why this one isn’t in TBM.
THE VELASQUEZ BROTHERS – It’s You (Galactic 1001) Vinyl upgrade AND cool picture sleeve. Again courtesy my pal JC. Chicano Invasion-influenced pop. They later became the Motifs… see above.

Imposters.jpg
THE IMPOSTERS – Wipe In (The Frogdeath 1)

THE EL PASO PREMIERS – This Is The Beginning (the Frogdeath 2)

photo-5.JPG
EKOS – Still In Love With You Baby (Loar 1000) Buddy Holly-styled teen beat from Amarillo ca. 1966. Only reference I had ever seen was in John Ingman’s West Texas disco and I had it pegged as either folk or doo wop. Fun record. Glad to have knocked it off my mental West Texas want list. At a tick over $50 I believe it’s the most I spent on a single record this year.

Corridor.jpg
THE GREAT GRANNIES – Sugar Man b/w The Facts of Life (Corridor 301) Okie dokie trio of sisters from just down the street. Been wanting it for a bit and finally nabbed a copy at a nice price on Ebay. Never seen it around here. People really want this to be something… northern… girls in the garage… A record can just be a record. This one’s a bit average methinks.

Chevelle V.JPG
THE CHEVELLE V – Come Back Bird (Askel 11) Picked this up in a trade after a forum lurker managed two copies on separate big country outtings this year. Great record. I’m pretty hot for their UMI single as well.

image.jpeg
TERRY & TOMMY – I’m No Fool b/w It Ain’t No Good To Love Anybody (AOK 1030) Long time want since first hearing it on the AOK set on Collectables from years back—which oddly omits the better of the two sides, “I’m No Fool”. Found at my favorite spot where I stopped on a whim one stormy afternoon, digging just ahead of the guy who pulled the Remaining Few record on Askel in Lubbock a few months later. I had been in touch with Terry Clark prior to the finding the record and will be posting up a piece on the duo after the new year.

THE INTRUDERS w/ ROD CROSBY – Where’d You Go and Who’d You See (Crosby & Co. 0000) Upgrade on an El Paso rocker from the early 70s. So cool.

GABRIEL WITH THE SEVEN INCH REEL – Lisa’s Boy b/w I Want To Feel You Close To Me (Zay Dee 209) I had long been curious about this record and then a copy was turned up by the same fellow that found the Remaining Few. Fun record and I scored a cheap copy on ebay. A slow downer folk side and a sunny pop side.

LOU PRIDE – You’ve Got To Work For Love (Albatross 2636) Southwest souler recorded at the Suemi boys’ Memphis studio. It ain’t “Comin’ Home In the Morning”, but it is neat early 70s soul. 50 cent find in ABQ.

LUST – Rock It On Out (NoMountain Records 20) Cool local heavy metal. I knew it was only a matter of time before I’d find it. With the “picture sleeve”, even.

Anyhowdy... a good year.

Very much enjoy reading through your yearly report, Westex. Even though it made my own purchase history look even more boring than it actually was. Just to imagine what kind of records MY neighbors would leave on my "porch" ... Most envious for your Askel 11.

THE TIGER BOYS – I’m A Tiger b/w I’ve Been Kissed By An Angel (Galactic 1002) Upgraded to unplayed vinyl courtesy JC. Can’t figure out why this one isn’t in TBM. (Westex)

When Hans Kesteloo decided to sell of his collection of 45s, he printed out a huge 50 plus page listing of his entire US 45s . He wanted to sell the entire collection for a price, which, by today's prices, would have been a good buy, but in 1992, 50K was a lot of money. So, he started to sell them individually. I purchased three records and also wanted him to make a cassette or two of unfamiliar 45s. The Tiger Boys was one of the 45s.
Rather than tape it, Hans sent me the 45 for no charge, noting that it was "terrible" and he couldn't ask for more than a dollar or two for it. I listened to it - sounded more like a routine "teener" / vocal croon with annoying chicks "yeah yeah-ing" in the background. The reverb'd guitar was nice. So I didn't consider it for TBM and filed the record away.
I listened to it for the first time in 15 years last night. I still don't find it to be even decent. There are scores of these borderline records which I could have included, things that are more in a category of something other than teenbeat/garage, like the Tiger Boys, Rico & The Ravens, and several examples posted by vinyl 01. But if I include those 45s, I'd have to include hundreds more which are just as good a match sound-wise, if not for quality. And I don't have the stamina to even go down that road.

In November, a friend and I bought a record collection from a radio station. 15000 45 + 4000 Lps. The records are from 1968 to 1988. Mostly canadian, french and Quebec stuff with some us and european big names. Unfortunatly nothing from 1964-1967, but a lot of great psych, pop psych, weird pop, cool soundtracks. We paid under $1000 for it, so for me it's was a great find. Some great Quebec 45s were released in 1968-69. I was able to upgrade my collection and I also got in that batch the Heritage Lp by Christmas, so I was happy!

2012 was a good year for me.

I found 3 longtime Northwest garage wants (all from 68 or so):

Yesterday's Children - One Way Up/Sunshine - Rex <no number>
The Otherside - Have You Seen her/Blue Tomorrow - <no label name> 42068
Calvin Clark Co. - Out Of My Mind/All Alone - Flight7 5668

An excellent Northwest instrumental from 1963:

Twilighters - Shiftin'/The Shift - Twi:Note 2606

2 fine R&B 45s from 59/60 to complete the Seattle based Nite Owl label:

Gallahads - Gone/So Long - Nite Owl 20
Playboys - Southbound Express/Cross My Heart - Nite Owl 30

And these longtime garage wants from the rest of the country:

Bacardis - Don't Sell Yourself/This Time - Midgard 203
Marauders - Warning/Just Times Between Us - Heads 9519
Kenny & Kasuals - Don't Let Your Baby Go/The Best Thing Around - Mark 1002
Mere Existence - Now/World Still Turns - Demo 7007
Barons - Come To Me/Only The Young - Monocle 1
Starfires - Won't Die Away/Cry For Freedom - G.I. 4004
Grifs - Keep Dreaming/Northbound - Palmer 5025

Here's hoping that 2013 is a good year for all of us

2012 was a good year for me.
-- Rich

Bacardis, Kenny and Yesterday's Children are all standouts. Especially Kenny which seems to be extremely rare. It never seems to get offered, and if there are many copies out there, it's not with people I know.

I haven't heard the Otherside. I'll check TBM tonight for a rating and description.

As time goes on it's apparent that scoring those elusive wants is a more difficult chore! Here are a few records that found it into my collect!on that come to mind:

Euphoria's Id - Deceptions Ice
The Monterays - Blast Off
The Fifth Generation - If I see Her
The Ebb Tides - My Baby's Gone
The New Fugitives - That's Queer
The Idols - Tru Luv Gone Astray
Thee Saints and The Prince of Darkness - Hey Girl
Journey Back - Synthetic People
Johnny's Uncalled Four - Please Say
Apollo's Apaches - Boss Be Good to Me
The End (Northeast version) finally have them both!
The Savages - Live and Wild (LP)
Best of The Hideouts (LP)
Rasputin and The Monks (Trans Radio LP)
The Aztecs on Julian
J.C. and the Newtones - Love -Human Emotion
Apple Glass Cyndrome - Someday
The Phaetons on VIN
Pink Floyd - Piper....UK mono
Small Faces -Odgens Nut... UK mono
Bobby Peterson - Mama Get the hammer..
Jimmy McCracklin - Georgia Slop
Lots of really cool 50's R&B,rockabilly, surf, etc...
Looking back on it like this, 2012 wasn't that bad after all!

My New England want list is getting smaller and smaller! One of this years goals is to nail The Bonnevilles on Fleetwood. I don't figure I'll ever own The Shadows Four on Fleetwood!

Inferno "The Inferno"

Nice! This appears to be extremely rare. Anyway, it's such a killer.
Pink Floyd - Piper....UK mono

Totally a top want for me. I only have the mono CD from that weird "book" that was released 5 years back or so. I rarely, if ever, play CDs, so at least I'm hoping for a nice reissue of this. Would of course much rather own an O.G., congrats!
