2014 Official Year Roundup

Here are my notable buys of the year.

img_8545.jpg

Toni McCann - I'll need an upgrade on this, but it was cheap. Plays OK. Also got her other 45 "No" but can't locate it for a photo. One of my holiday jobs is to get my 45s organised.

Johnny Rebb and the Atlantics

img_8537.jpg

Russ Kruger and the Atlantics

img_8540.jpg

The Others, from Adelaide and pretty scarce.

img_8542.jpg

Black Diamonds - I got a M- of their other 45 a few years back. This is also a nice copy.

img_8547.jpg

Atlantics 'Come On' - a nice VG++ copy. I've been after this 45 for over 10 years, have been second high bidder about half a dozen times. This copy came from a record hunter who found it at Dapto markets. I like knowing that it came from such an incongruous place - for people not from Sydney, Dapto is one of those country towns that city people laugh about as having no culture and only beig famous for its greyhound races "the Dapto Dogs".

Arrived the day before Xmas. Thanks to Stampy for this one.

Pretty happy with this year - getting one or two major wants per year is my goal.

I'm glad to see The Off-Set "You're A Drag" mentioned in Harvestman Man's post. I've always thought that a brilliant folk-rocker but this might be the first time I've seen it mentioned anywhere.
It is brilliant, but relatively unknown as well. As a result, even though it's pretty difficult to find, my copy cost only about $30. (The filler B-side certainly doesn't add to the value.)

I've just noticed - all three of those "big" finds came from record selling groups on Facebook. It was my first year partaking of record buying/selling on there, hopefully that bodes well for the future...

Never got around to buying any big ticket items in 2014. Too many kids & mindless family vacations took it's fair share of my money. But still got a shitload of fab 45s. These two were high on my wants list. TNS is not garage but a full on attack on the senses fro the early 70s. I believe an official re-issue is planned for 2015.

IMG_20141212_125727.jpg

Also this, bought for gbp 15 in London in November made my year. In rough shape, as they all seem to be, but plays real well. And when the guitar solo kicks in, well, it makes me laugh hard. Whatta sound!

Have a smashing Yuletide & a great 2015!

Cheers,
Thomas

I look at peoples' lists and get a bit jealous. Also a bit dejected when I see what people have bought over the year. But what the hay… my focus is local records of all types. And I don't have to rely strictly on dealer lists or ebay. So my grabs are varied and not at all 'garage' for the most part.

So, some of the neater records out of the 500 or 600 I drug home over the year.

WEST TEXAS RECORDS...
Weldon Rogers and Wanda Wolfe - Everybody Wants You (Jewel) Rockin' cop of "Everybody's Trying to Be my Baby" that I've been wanting for a while. Estate sale score.

House of Representatives - Mojo Workout (TGM) Crappy record. But thrilled to find it. Used to see it on occasion before I realized that the label was a local studio. Never seen it since. Picked this up for a quarter to file on the West Texas shelf.

Elroy Dietzel - Teenage Ball (Bo-Kay) Found 2 copies. Probably THE most common 'wild' local record. I CANNOT find Rockin' Bones, though. Ever. Maybe this year.

Lynn Poynor - Last Kiss (Charay) Lynn was married to Larry Poynor and was in the performing version of the Circus ("Bad Seed" on Offe). It is what you would expect. A girl singing “Last Kiss”.

EKOS - Still in Love With You Baby (Loar) Panhandle record. Both sides is remakes/covers, but with a Texas drawl. Have a much nicer copy, but grabbed this lesser copy on the cheap just to have.

Curley Cook and the Versitones - Avalanche (Norcur) Hobbs, NM instro. Upgrade.

Verma Lewis - It's a Most Difficult Thing (Whip) Texas Panhandle R&B. Got this off an OntheRoadSouth auction.

Voltz - Rock Stompin' Rock n' Rollers (Goldust) Regional label I'm VERY slowly piecing together. This is hard rock. Metal. Yes.

Precision - Self-titled (NoMountain) Local label from the 80s that would release anything and I've made it a goal to collect it all. I have the big ones (3 copies of this, the Ragar brothers, Joseph Brunelle, Lust) It's a tough label as I don't know about 'em until I find 'em at this point. I've got 30 or so releases so far and of the remaining 35 or so I only know one title. My fear is that some of those will be cassette only. This was a dime at Goodwill. M-, but no cover. Killer hard rawk by some high school kids.

Lynx - The Gate (Hare) Found this digging in an old walk-in freezer in the back of an old 50s hamburger drive in. Local record. Not their best. But I am obsessed with this local stuff.

J. Gale and the Games - Suds (Eyeball) Great frat boozer and neato down geared country thud loser on the flip. Found in the freezer above. Already had a copy or two I got from the source five or 6 years ago, but had never found a wild copy since hearing it on a Buffalo Bop comp 15 years back.

The Shayds - Bring Your Love (International Artists) Despite being basically a local combo Shades/Shayd/Shayds 45s never turn up around here. I got two copies in the spring from a neighbor who got them from a junker. He also found other cool stuff like the Esquires "Come On" (fast version) and two copies of the Remaining Few, inc. the cracked copy which sat here in my house for a few weeks before it made it onto someone's year end list above.

Buddy Kennedy – Don’t Leave (One World) Not a big record, but probably one of my favorite buys of the year. Came across a few 1000 45s at a local thrift that hasn’t put out 45s in a few years… I guess they were just hoarding them. A few different large collections were mixed in, including some local stuff from the 70s. I’ve known about this record for a few years, but could never remember details about it. Weird, atmospheric soul that doesn’t follow normal song structure. Mint and a dime.

Tom Cody – Outlaws Getaway (NoMountain) Neato local guitar soli 45 I didn't know about prior to this year. Found two copies.

Jan Moore – Head Over Heels In Love (Boyd Records) Teen gal from just up the road mile or two who had a knee jarring rocker on Winston. Grabbed this twice this year, with the most recent copy being mint. This is a poppy, sappy rocker.

Jan Lessard – Kiss and Run (Soft) I’m not so sure this isn’t a recycled Bobby Skel track. But Jan was a local Odessa boy and he never mentioned having released a 45 other than an Orbison-esque rocker on Coronado.

Commonwealth Jones - Jump and Run (Banner) The most common big $ 45 from west Texas. Frantic Ronnie Dawson 45 bopper released in the mid-60s out of Lubbock. Actually the SECOND time I've found it in this particular shop. Same spot where I've also scored the Gentlemen on Vandan, Mr. Lucky and the Gamblers, Joe Poovey on Dixie, House of David on Cheese, Cynics on Bear, all three One Way Street 45s on DEEEK, Avon & the Rave Ons on Towne House, What's Left on Capri, and other coolness. Traded to OnTheRoadSouth for the next two.

Carrols Mood – Out She Goes (AOK) Loooooong time want. Local record but it never turns up out here. And the band leader ain’t talking. Dumb me… I just noticed the flip is a remake of a Dion song. Just need the Shades now to have all the garagey 45s on AOK proper. Anybody want to sell an Odessa boy an Odessa record?

The Cords – Termites (Rakki) Neato instro recorded at Norman Petty’s Studio.

Ronnie Smith – Lookie Lookie Lookie (Brunswick) Odessa teen. Last one of his 4 records I needed. Any Aussie’s have a copy of Ivor Fisher’s cover version on Viking?

Swift Rain - Coming Down (Hi) Great psych by an El Paso crew, recorded by the Suemi guys after their move to Memphis.

Various -I Love You Gorgo (Suemi) Most I spent on a record this year- $80 BIN. Big spender, I know. But I didn't think I would ever own it. Lots of cool El Paso sounds - folk, psych, rawk. It wound up in better shape than described. I spent more money on a backpacking quilt I will use just a couple of times a year. Priorities, I suppose.

OTHER TEXAS RECORDS...
Robin Hood Brians - Dis a Itty Bit (Fraternity) Neato Tyler, Texas rocker.

Mouse- Do the Best You Can (Fraternity) Written / Produced by Robin Brians.

The Esquires – Come On, Come On (Glevalley) #103. The cool fratty version. One of two copies found in the area this year.

The Purple Haze – It’s Getting Harder All the Time (JMS) Found this in San Antonio for 50 cents. A fave since hearing it on Acid Visions 12 or 13 years back.

Arkey Blue and the Blue Cowboys - Too Many Pills (Tonka) Wound up with a few copies of this oddball country 45 that was on God Less America.

Tibby Edwards - Fool That I Was (Starday) T-Riff hillbilly bopper I got off ebay for a cheap BIN. Even while others were bidding up a lesser copy.

Travelin' Texans - Beating on the Bars (D) Masked Billy Walker country rocker about getting tossed in jail for chasing underaged skirts. Found it alongside the Weldon Rogers above and a Slim Willet on Edmoral I didn't have. And the Big Star record below. Long time want.

FOREIGN RECORDS...
Roosevelt Grier - Struttin' 'n Twistin' (Liberty) Cool R&B from the freezer dig.

Manchester Bridge Band - Mysteries (Comet) Oddball 70s rock with a (very) faint whiff of garage. From the freezer.

The Dappers - Chicken Twist (Foxie) Outstanding rhythm and blues rocker from the freezer.

Jean Wells - With My Love And You've Got (Calla) Not rare, but not a common record in west Texas. I dumbly sold a copy I used to have. Found two copies in a box early in the year though (with one of the Elroy Dietzels) Storming soul.

The Toys – I Got My Heart Set On You (Musicor) White label promo. Really great gal soul. 2-sider.

Lorraine Chandler - What Can I Do & I Can’t Change (RCA) Two different promos. Neat voice. Soul.

Nancy Wilcox - Coming On Strong (RCA) white label mid tempo northern.

The Charmaines - Keep On Searchin' (Minit) Came up on two copies of this cool funky soul 45 at an estate sale where I somehow overlooked a copy of Eddie Bo's "Hook and Sling" on Scram that was found later.

Ray Rodriguez and His Orchestra – A Rainy Day (Alegre) Cool latin boogaloo on the flip and a moody song about rain on this side. Same spot as the Charmaines.

The Pygmies - Don't Monkey With Tarzan (Liberty) Neato surf. Really good good.

David Clayton Thomas - Take Me Back (Tower) Joy to the world.

Gail Kelly – Who Do You Think You’re Fooling (Capitol) Moody soul. Neat record.

Hoyt Axton - San Fernando w/ PS (Colgems) Above three came from two stores in one town while traveling the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Two nice piles, with one being a bunch of mid-60s promos that were clean. This should be in TBM but is not.

Big Star - In the Street (Ardent) Big Star records in West Texas? Wild. Found with the Travelin' Texans and Wanda Rogers.

Sebastian & Pilot Band – Hang Glider Man (Glider Records) Amazing 45. Rural rock with some psych moves. And it’s about hang gliding. I’ve enjoyed this record a bunch. Certainly got a dime’s worth of entertainment out of it. From the Buddy Kennedy dig.

Shae – Fly Me (Moonshine) Weird 70s psychy thing. From the Buddy Kennedy piles.

Bob Marriott and the Continentals – I’ll Walk a Mile (Jayco) Moody R&B. One dime. With Sebastian, Shae, and Buddy.

Love - Forever Changes (Elektra) So good.

Count Five - Psychotic Reaction (Double Shot Records)

Bonniwell Music Machine (WB) Great album.

The Awakening - Hear, Sense, and Feel (Black Jazz) Neat free jazz / funk lp.

Dino Valente - Dino (Epic) Quicksilver Messenger Service character. People love it or hate it. I dig it.

Ned Doheny - Hard Candy and S/T (Columbia) So good for those that enjoy 70s sounds that aren't rock. "Give It Up For Love" is the jam and really the best thing about Hard Candy. The s/t lp is a good play all the way through.

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (Brother) I had not owned this record since I had a cassette copy back in 7th grade when I was going through a Monkees/Beatles/Beach Boys thing. I wound up listening to this more than anything else this year by a mile even though I just found it a little over a month ago.

The Minister and The Nuns - When The Heart Sings (Fe) Strangeness. That I willed myself to find. Even though I wasn't chasing it. Waxidermy fave. Nuns from Brazil back a West Virginia missionary. Not at all what you would expect to hear. (the Brazilian version http://mishkids.com/heartsings.htm)

The Impressions - This Is My Country (Curtom) One of the best lps ever.

Very envious in regards to The Others...that is a killer Diddley cover!

I read in a previous post that one Forum member bought a copy of The Aargons 'Do The Dog' on Casino, which strays into the no-mans land between white rock'n'roll and 'garage'. Earlier this year I picked up an upgrade of another Casino 45, The Rockin' Continentals 'Cobra 289'. This is a much rarer companion to The Rockin' Continentals other Casino record, 'The 309', a copy of which has been in my collection since the mid 70s when I traded it with the late Jim Stapleton, a Canadian collector/dealer who lived in Memphis at the time. Anyone here remember Jim, or his friend Tom Hitch?

Another long time want that came my way was The Senders 'Party Line' on Leopard, which, due to its 1966 issue date, is also apparently regarded as 'garage', although to my ears it is a superb example of a musically tight rock'n'roll combo.

I never knew Jim or Tom, but those 3 Casino 45's you mention are all killer! That label really picked their spots!

T'was me that bought the Argons on ebay.......... I got my "Cobra 289" from Barry W about 3 years ago, and "The 309" about 5 years ago on the bay... great stuff all three...........

And I reckon you outbid me on the Senders about 4 months ago on the bay ?? .... ha ha ha... we must have the same ears...

And I reckon you outbid me on the Senders about 4 months ago on the bay ?? .... ha ha ha... we must have the same ears...

No Keb, I bought mine from a UK collector who is pruning his collection. He also sold me The Tempests 'Rockin' Rochester', which is definitely not a 'garage' record.

Regarding those 3 Casino label rockers - how did US teens fall for the Fab 4 hype when they had music like 'Do The Dog' in their own backyards? Not to mention The Sonics, Wailers, Florian Monday, etc. Still, their UK counterparts were guilty of the same crime.
