2014 Official Year Roundup

Because teenagers are living for the moment - "now" sounds, not something antiquated 'n' dated
Thankfully they looked forward in '64, not backward.

I was 16 in 1963, the year Beatlemania hit England. I can assure you that I was looking anywhere other than the Merseybeat dominated pop charts. Mostly I was looking to what was and had been happening in the Blues world of Chicago, Ska sounds from Jamaica, R'n'B imported to England by US servicemen and record stores in areas with recently arrived immigrants from the West Indies. These 'new' to my ears sounds were like waterholes in a desert in comparison with what the UK music biz was forcing upon us. Maybe I was just looking sideways.

In their favour, I will be forever grateful to the Fab 4 for avidly promoting Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry and other antiquated 'n' dated favourites of theirs. Without the Beatles advocacy, it is possible that those old timers would never have toured the UK.

No Keb, I bought mine from a UK collector who is pruning his collection. He also sold me The Tempests 'Rockin' Rochester', which is definitely not a 'garage' record.

Regarding those 3 Casino label rockers - how did US teens fall for the Fab 4 hype when they had music like 'Do The Dog' in their own backyards? Not to mention The Sonics, Wailers, Florian Monday, etc. Still, their UK counterparts were guilty of the same crime.
I've long felt that most people just go for what they are exposed to. That's hardly a unique thought of mine. But following that to present day, as much as we'd like to fancy otherwise, I don't think kids in the 1960's necessarily had that much better taste than the kids today. They were fortunate enough to be fed a steady diet of some of the greatest music of all time...The Stones, Beatles, Kinks, Beach Boys, Raiders etc.. Today...they are not so fortunate. But I think if today's kids were constantly exposed to Les Grys-Grys they would be buying their records and going to their shows. I'm not trying to defend the youth of today, just making what I believe is at least a somewhat accurate observation.

Though I wasn't as lucky as some of you (a few truly amazing lists here!), I still managed to keep the cool vinyl coming in. On the LP front, new acquisitions included the first Our Generation album, Bran's “Hedfan” and the “Danmarksmestrene I Popmusik” 10,” and the following singles found their way into my 45 boxes:

The Bojax - “Fast Life” (Panther)
The Byrds - “Turn! Turn! Turn!” (Columbia red wax DJ)
Chubby And The Turnpikes - “I Didn't Know The Inside Story” (Capitol DJ) (northern soul)
Phil Cordell - “Red Lady” (Janus) (Fading Yellow favorite)
Los Delfines - “Now She's Gone” (Uruguayan London) (awesome South American psych-pop)
The Emulations - “Story Of My Life” (Emulate) (sweet soul – am hoping to reissue this one)
The Escapades - “I Tell No Lies” (Arbet)
Facts Of Life - “I've Seen Darker Nights” (Frana)
The Four Pro's - “Just Another Girl” (Carla) (northern soul – MopTopMike's “Mon Petite Chow” comp turned me on to this one!)
Nora Guthrie - “Emily's Illness” (Mercury) (Only In America)
The In-Be-Tweens - “Girl Child, I Am An Evil Witchman” (Highland) (my first “Insane Collection” acquisition...)
Gloria Jones - “Tainted Love” (Champion) (northern soul classic)
Just Four Men - “There's Not One Thing” (U.K. Parlophone) (pre-Wimple Winch pop-beat)
The Litter - “Action Woman” (Scotty)
Los Saicos - “El Entierro De Los Gatos” (Peruvian DisPeru)
Thee Sixpence - “Heart Full Of Rain” (All-American)
Things To Come - “Sweetgina” (Starfire) (finally a nice upgrade! Now looking for a home for my very noisy but playable old copy...)
The Velvet Underground - “What Goes On” (M-G-M DJ)

Would his name have been Barney per chance Jerry ? I sold him a Tempests about a year ago, and he sold it on for a profit...

Just had a couple of cool year-end finds - the Pineapple Heard on Diamond and the Turtles' "Outside Chance". Both rather beaten-up, but still playing great!

I'm pretty sure I picked up the Pineapple Heard too this year (great song!), the Turtles 45 remains beyond my reach tho'.

No, it was not Barney K, who I know rates 'Rockin' Rochester' very highly. If my memory is correct he got a copy about 7 years back from Pascal P in a trade. Personally, I think the A side is very contrived and sounds like a typical vocal from an instrumental band. The instrumental flip is great to my ears. Just a matter of personal taste, I suppose. My idea of upstate NY rock'n'roll is Terry Daly's 'You Don't Bug Me' which currently rates at less than half the financial value of the Tempest's 45.

My copy of 'Rockin' Rochester' came, a mentioned previously, along with The Senders 45, in a trade with a non-scene (unseen may be a more apt description) English collector who periodically 'purifies' his record stack. One of the pioneering band who used to visit 'Breathless ' Dan Coffey when he lived in Newport in the late '60s, this man is now in his early 70s and retains all the mannerisms, prejudices and dress codes of an old time Teddy Boy - despite the fact that he is a PhD! Very difficult to deal with and one has always to remember that, until the mid '80s he played his 45s on one of those old 'Dansette' type players which had needles instead of a stylus. So discs that look mint may not play that way. My end of the trade was a spare copy of Leon and Carlos 'Rock Everybody', a quantity find some 30 years back by Virginian, Denis West, later convicted of wife murder. Anyone on this Forum remember Denis? A clever operator who succeeded in convincing you that you were one of his favoured few who he'd let have his only copy of ________ as a steal for $200. Later, you would discover that you were one of maybe 25 members of the 'favoured few'. This trick would not be possible nowadays thanks to social media and the internet.

Being new to the forum, I can't look back at last year's list and try and figure out when some discs arrived. So I'm just going to list stuff that hasn't been filed yet...but fortunately I haven't filed in a good long time! So this is probably more of a second half of 2014 list..U.S. stuff first, then foreign.
