2016 roundup

I dunno how you all keep track of things. Any record bought more than a month ago is filed somewhere and I have a hard time thinking off the cuff about what I got this year,

I've purchased a lot this year, but mostly teen, doowop, rockabilly, and blues, and very little garage this year. I did get a long time want:

Dynamites Columbia 4 song EP with pic sleeve. Killer Swiss beat!

Ace score, one of the handful of the best Swiss beat releases. Not looking to hijack this post, but anyway follows a few pics to further illuminate the saga.

Dynamites started out early 60's, their first private press EP is a genuinely tough score. Xerox sleeve on my copy, even the Feathered Apple was unable to locate an original for me way back when.

Following on a year or so later the band released two 45's in rapid succession, these being the sides collected on the French EP.

A bit of publicity was provided courtesy of the fantastic Swiss pop magazine titled, well, POP. This is issue #0 from November 1965, handy in establishing a timeline for the bands releases.

Here's the sleeve of the EP, further words would be superfluous.

A somewhat overlooked addendum to the bands all too limited discography is the Swiss Beat Live LP, delivering precisely as advertised. Dynamites super frantic ravers Jenny Jenny / I'm Movin' On astound to this day.

No shortage of competition active on the scene back then, this overview form March 1966 highlights a few of the prime movers & shakers of the era>

Swiss Beat Top 7 bands POP #1 3:66.jpg

Tip of the iceberg as this somewhat mid-blowing arrays of beat merchants will serve to illustrate. I suppose my dream gig would be the Dirty Cider opening for the Moon Sheep. Or might that be the other way around???

Swiss Beat Band names! POP #19 9:67.jpg

Certain of the local Swiss bands managed to get around, as was revealed and captured in this terrific Star Club LP, my fave of the handful issued at the time.

Enthusiasts of the down & dirty beat sound would be well served to lend an ear, with the Phantom Brothers tracks being particular standouts.

Sadly the gods of coin deserted me in 2016 so my haul will be nowhere near as good as that bastard North East Beast and his high paid, fancy pants, jet setting super job. I did get a few pretties though.

God, if only the high paid part was true.

I did score some expensive wants this year though but I've had to sell a lot of records this year to bridge the gaps in my desires compared to my means.

2016 was a very good year, for collecting anyway.

I finally obtained my number 1 want:

Graveyard Five - The Marble Orchard / Graveyand Five Theme - Stanco 102

The 45 has a small edge crack. It causes one pop on the instro side, but the crack is inaudible on the Marble Orchard side. It is VG++ aside from the crack. I got it at a steep discount because of the crack.

I managed to finally snag copies of these recent quantity finds:

Chancellors - On Tour / On Tour - D&C 22
Mach V - If I Could / I Want To Stay - Associated Artists 102 ($195!)

Various Garage 45s

What will 2017 have in store?

By common consensus, 2016 sucked big time and I won't argue with that. But I did come up with a few nice additions to the record collection, including cool LPs by The Dimensions, The Beatniks and The Sorrows as well as these 7-inchers:

Caretakers Of Deception - “Cuttin' Grass” (Sanctus; from the find)
Carter-Lewis & The Southerners - “Somebody Told My Girl” (U.K. Oriole – Jimmy Page session)
Chancellors - “On Tour” (D&C; one of the eBay guitar player copies)

Les Dabsters - “J'en Ai Assez” (Canadian Passe-Temps – Quebec punk)
Edicates - “She's Gone” (Mus-I-Col)
Esquires - Come On, Come On” (Glenvalley – the good version)
Frabjoy And Runcible Spoon - “Animal Song” (U.K Marmalade; a Fading Yellow favorite)
Frays - “Keep Me Covered” (U.K. Decca)
The Nerves - “Hanging On The Telephone” + 3 E.P. (Bomp second press – but the greatest power pop 7” ever!)
Regent - “Qui Es-Tu?” (Canadian Carrousel – even better Quebec punk)
Stormies - “Try, Try Try” (Greek Pan-Vox – pretty thrashed copy; looking for an an upgrade...)
Swamp Rats - “No Friend Of Mine” (St. Clair)
We The People - “In The Past” (Challenge – just in under the wire)

What will 2017 have in store?

How about a couple of pics to accompany the PS?

If the spirit moves you to sing along to your fave the following may prove useful...

GRAVEYARD PARADISE
Written Asbjørn (Asa) Krogtoft
Sung by 1-2-6
1967

The pale white-collared gentlemen, they're coming side by side
The holy court of justice, to a meeting in the night
They do not talk they do not smile they think and that's enough
They will not make their judgement till the moon rises off above
And of a thousand soldier boys
At last they've made their choice
Another victim soon arrives at Graveyard Paradise

And there's a smiling little girl, whose dinner was a snail
It's hard for her to walk, she's got her brother in a pail
Her father's lying in the mud, her mother's been murdered too
Her bloody eyes can't even see, and she don't know what to do
But the pale white-collared guys
Those desperate vampires
They're watching her with bloodshot eyes from Graveyard Paradise

Yes, everything is black and cold in Graveyard Paradise
And when somebody is talking there is it just to tell you lies
Those pale white-collared gentlemen, yes I saw them as they stood
Outside the Graveyard gates, they would be laughing if they could
And when somebody dies
When the moon rise in the skies
They're watching you with bloodshot eyes from Graveyard Paradise
