Crowdfunding sites/operations like Kickstarter exist for legitimate reasons. They allow projects that require large initial investments to get money without the access of a wealthy benefactor or loan from a financial institution. I see them as a cultural extension of the libertarian/techie culture where people are free to invest as suits their interests and not having to kowtow to the financial and power structures. I've seen this process used/attempted for documentary movies, which makes some sense.
However, I agree that using crowdfunding for a book is a lazy and dubious idea. Someone who is a semiprofessional writer (I think that's a fair statement about Schinder's resume) doesn't need money for a computer or publishing SW which is all you need as 'capital" to write a book.
