Best of the instrumentals

The Gamblers - Moon Dawg on World Pacific.

The flip is LSD-25, an early (1960) musical mention of this subject.

Good to see 'Lemon Lime' listed. I prefer this to the other side which always sounds a little forced to my ears. I suspect that The Tempests may have been at heart an instrumental band.

Yes they were. I have a master tape of them performing mainly surf & rock instrumentals. It's a long time since I played it, but I remember it is pretty good.

Here's the best Shadows tune the Shads never did...

I mentioned this 1963 film clip in my review of The Esquires on Garagehangover, they used to show it on the Canadian equivalent of MTV, Muchmusic. Richard Patterson on drums was later in 3's A Crowd.

The Royal Flairs sound like The Astronauts under another name... probably much of the same equipment I'd bet!

I hope this isn't to say that the Shadows never did anything as good. The Shadows are masters of the genre (not saying there aren't others). Hank Marvin is one fine guitarist with brilliant style and feeling. One of the best if you ask me. The rest of the band is excellent, too.
Other masters would be:

I just meant that of any Shadows style songs I think this is the most originally Shadows-ish, or at least early period shads with the bendy string thing going on. I rank a slight notch ahead of the Hamburg Beatles' Cry For A Shadow. Chad Allen & The Reflections had some great Shadows style songs before they morphed into The Guess Who, but mostly with vocals.

It is a wonderfully dated cheesy film clip, made for video juke boxes... I thought maybe it was a gag the first time I saw it, but that's what's so fun about it.

I have everything the Ventures ever recorded from the beginning to around 1974, most on vinyl, so I know they are never less than worthwhile (even when pinching from The Wailers). :sunny:

Wow, that must be a lot! How many regular records did they release, not counting the compilations? About 60? 70? I wonder if they might be the band with the biggest output of the sixties, or of all time...?
I listened a lot to the Ventures lately. Not all of their albums are great, though there is surely good stuff on most of them.
But these two I found to be the most consistent and overall top-notch:

1. "The Ventures" (1961), which I consider an absolute classic of the genre. Top-notch playing, highly inventive and varied, without being patchy at all. To me probably the most essential instrumental group album of all.

2. "The Ventures" (1966), which is probably their "garagey-est". Again, very consistent, top-notch performances, highly inventive, this time not only the playing, but also the sound arrangements with all kinds of effects on the guitars and others matching the theme of the song. Almost every tune on that can shake a 60s dancefloor, I suppose.

Then there is the great "Ventures in Space" album...
Which are your favorites, Becca?

Another question: there is an annoying hiss throughout the whole Ventures 1966 album. I've got a mono copy, which is in great shape otherwise. Does your copy have that as well? Bad vinyl maybe? How bout the stereo version? I was tempted to get that too, just to find out...

Wow, just noticed that Johnny Rebb passed away last month. Was this even mentioned on G45? Former frontman of the Atlantics who were a hugely influential surf instrumental band who went on to release some of the world's best garage beat punkers.
