Best of the instrumentals

Wow, that must be a lot! How many regular records did they release, not counting the compilations? About 60? 70? I wonder if they might be the band with the biggest output of the sixties, or of all time...?
I listened a lot to the Ventures lately. Not all of their albums are great, though there is surely good stuff on most of them.

Which are your favorites, Becca?

There are a half milk crate of LPs for sure, and i had to have oddities like a Record Club LP with different versions and even a budget label one with renamed tracks from various albums, and there are a lot of non-album single sides. There was a doldrums period where they tried to change with the times and add vocalists and stuff which i won't bother with but they came back with a lot of Japan only releases that are worth having. It's a kind of madness. They put out so much stuff while touring constantly there may even be some tracks none of the actual Ventures played on, but usually there were at least two. The album with the least actual ventures is that Telstar/Lonely Bull hit covers one according to session sheets.

I think the best album soundwise was just before the switch to Mosrites: Let's Go!, but I like Wild Angels a lot too (I have a Japanese pressing so maybe that's superior somehow), Nokie was back to Fenders with that one I'm sure. The Batman album is hard to find in Stereo at a reasonable price (the Stereo masters have been missing for a long time, I think many CDs of it are the mono master). My original Dolton has no hiss though i wish it were in better condition, the original U.S. Doltons seem to always have a deep sound if you can find them in top shape (which is unlike some Liberty records I've had), the Canadian editions not so much. The band originals on the '66 Batman LP are killer! In Space is more of an exotica album, sort of like the Three Suns to me (whose Japanese LP from 1960 with Del Casher on guitar is a must have if you like the outre stuff).

People have really been digging up some great early '60s U.S. rock instrumentals, making Don McLean look foolish hopefully. I still like Johnny & The Hurricanes...

Great guitar freakout at :55

Thanks for the detailed info and recommendations, Becca! :tiphat:

Sometimes this gets overlooked because it's by Sandy Nelson:
I also haven't seen anyone mention Mystic Journey by Tomorrow's Headlines.

Turned on to this tune a few years ago at "Dan's Garage" and never seem to tire of repeated listenings:
"The Young Ones" - "Sour Grapes"
