I rec'd an email the other day promoting the release of 'Bonehead Crunchers'....Is this the work of anyone on here? I'm not familiar with this type of music so can't add anything, good or bad. I just don't know these records.

tracklist:

Welcome to volume 1 of the Primitive but essential world of Bonehead: 14 Fuzz-drenched 70s bone crunchers from the USA at the Cusp of Garage, Hard Rock and Proto-punk. Loud, unrepentant and reeking of attitude; these artefacts of cool were uncovered from 45s pressed in minute quantities between 1969 and 1977 and forge a direct link between Pebbles/Nuggets Garage to the blow out of ‘76 Punk, circumventing the atrociousness of progressive rock and singer/songwriter putridness. These slices of pure high energy will blow the top of your head off, ingrain themselves into the remnants of your brain by way of a high octane lobotomy leaving you a blubbering mess insanely smirking at today’s musical endeavours.

Side A
1 – Supachief – Red Brained Woman
2 – Heavy Cruiser - Louie Louie
3 – Blackstone - Going on the prowl
4 – Larry Mann the Wild Mann - The Meat Grinder
5 – Renegade - Don’t stop Let’s rock
6 - Captain Foam - No Reason
7 – Volt Rush Band - Love to you
Side B

1 –
Canyon - Top of the world
2 –
Black Death - Rock n roll with Ork
3 –
Left End - Sunshine Girl
4 –
Neil Norman - Wild Boys
5 –

6 -
Grasshopper - My Honey
7 -
Stone Axe - Snakebit

Let's hope this is a real deal and not another blog rip.
All of these songs are posted at Robin Wills Purepop blog.

I have this comp, and it is the real deal!
It sounds great - much, much better than the MP3 files available on the Purepop blog.
It's an excellent comp, and highly recommended! Supachief, Volt Rush Band and Stone Axe are just amazing.
300 copies only.

It's like a Killed by Death for raw early 70s US hard rock. good job indeed. I've read it's already sold out at the source (all gone in less than 24 hours according to what I read on another forum).

Looking forward to this! I accidentally stumbled across it last week while browsing for something else & it is now on it's way.

Bonehead, the new loud. There is at least enough material out there for a vol.2. After the rather disappointing Michigan Meltdown I'm crossing my fingers this series brings something not only new, but also good, to the table.

Supachief, for a 45 that was released both in the US and in Europe it is rather elusive. Never seen the European pressing for sale.

A quick check on youtube turned up most of the songs... good for me as I don't have to get the comp heheh
Much better than Michigan Meltdown but still way too much regular hard rock, boogie and blues rock for my taste. That Renegade track is from '81 - according to a band member commenting on the youtube link btw so 'pressed between 69 - 77 seems to be a bit off which makes me ask myself how much of a 'real deal' it actually is... but whatever... these bonecruncherfuzzbustersuperheavyevil comps just ain't my thing, apparently

There are better songs in this genre. But you can't dismiss the Stone Axe track.

I definitely don't dismiss that Stone Axe track - but it IS a blues rocker (albeit pretty hi energy and sleazy) with pretty generic 'woke up on the floor can't get to the door' kinda lyrics. I don't really see that link to "76 punk" in dirty southern rock. But it's one of the better songs on this comp. I still find more excitement in some of the songs on Sainte Anthony's Fyre or Sir Lord Baltimore... and the only good NWOBHM LP I've ever heard - the 1st privately pressed album by British band Legend also blows most of this away. But enough ranting from me - I'll leave the thread to people who actually enjoy these kinda sounds.:)

I actually completely agree with you regarding this song. Hadn't heard it until now. Somehow it didn't occur to me that it might be on YouTube. Doh!

Blues rockers suck hard, no matter how cool the sound might be. I like the Volt Rush Band. That's the sound I go for. And Dark Star Spectre. I want a comp filled with tunes like that. Though it looks like I might have to do it myself in the end.

Do it! :)
I myself would love a comp of Swedish heavy/fuzz dumbness... there are a few real cool ones out there although it's nothing I ever bothered to collect myself... And maybe it would also boil down to third rate Uriah Heep wanna-bees and lo-fi boogie rock... But stuff like this rules mightily:

Haha, that's a pretty cool song. LP only I presume?

And yes, I don't think even Scandinavia as a whole would have enough tracks good enough to warrant a comp. Certainly not a 45 only compilation. Too much blues infested turds in Europe in the 70s.

Lp only yes - but the best thing on the whole album... which is one of the top ten rarest LP's from Sweden... I used to have a M- copy in the 80's that I sold for ca $100. Today you'd have to add a zero I think. Produced by Fowley when he had a short stint in Sweden, which is pretty obvious upon hearing some of the tracks hehe. Pretty cool LP but definitely not great. This particular track was also included on a promo compilation from MNW which is easier to find and most of all waay cheaper(I guess the inclusion of this rare fuzz punker is still kinda under the radar - the rest of the album pretty much blows).

Well, there weren't too many songs about the joy(!) of heroin overdoses in 1971.
It's exceptionally dumb (and great).

So I got around to listening to this yesterday and the conclusion is that this Bonehead genre is nothing for me. Not that it is that much of a genre to begin with mind you, if the evidence at display here is supposed to define it. All over the place rock & if we are to follow the definition of Bonehead on the back cover I am flat out insulted on behalf of the Volt Rush Band who certainly is eons above a lot of the bands featured here.

Side 1 is the strongest with VRB's Love to you being the far superior song, followed by Captain Foam (is this on a 45?), Larry Mann the Wild Mann and Supachief.

On side 2 it's slim pickings indeed. I ended up needle dropping the three first cuts before ol' Gene Norman's son got to perform his incredibly stupid, albeit a tad charming, Wild Boys. A real Bonehead song btw. I fell asleep during Stone Axe.

The sound is good throughout though, and the liners are slightly entertaining. But why no label & year info apart from the 5 label shots? Why not display all of the labels?

Meh

Dogma?!? My ears are connected to my my brain. I hear boring blues rock. If I wanna hear boring blues rock I can play it on my own guitar. Snakebite isn't completely bad, but it's no 'Going All The Way' or 'Be Forwarned' either. In my world it's just a waste of time, basically ;)

Well....in my my brain in my my world it gets a tad tired to listen to those ol' shiny nuggets every night and day. I need new food to feed the brain. Like ordering the same beer all the time.
Don't get me wrong - that has it's charm too. My daddy always use the same pålägg on his morning bread. That might be what scares the hell out of me, it sends signals to me as being stuck in a rut.

Anyhoo my dear old friend - I added you to a group on facebook as revenge. Hopefully you'll find something that won't bore you out of you face. (To quote the Adverts)

Enjoy, fellahs. I'll stick with '60's garage punk. There are still treasures to be mined out there. For me, '70's punk is diluted '60's punk. I never got in the Ramones, et all, because it sounded like watered down '60's punk to my ears. There is more out there to be heard.

I get your point, but to me, Ramones vs fuzz spiked underground hard rock 45s from the 70s have nothing in common. Not the pre-punk angle either. What´s fascinating is the sound of bands caught in time capsules.

But it´s not for everyone, by all means.

New addition! Must make sampler. Surprisingly cheap. Maybe I just have a poor taste in music. I can live with that. :D
