Chronology of garage comps

I have flashback vol 1 and 2 .... But not sure if they are first pressing where they all numbered? Mine have the limited edition and the line next to it but no number! So is this a boot? They both sound fine no high frequency. I read there were some exact replicas in the mid 80's.

I'll post some pictures up to see if any can help.

I have some bftg comp questions
how many of them have liner notes and label scans on the back?
Is that only vol 1 and vol. 2 (mono)?

The rest I've only seen them with the track list and band photos on the back. are those latter presses or he just decide to switch design?

I bet you all wish you hadn't scared Sylvain away - he knows all there is to know about this

I remember Walter Gee**sen had this on one of his list in the early 90s at quite a high price. I wanted to check it out as I had not heard of any of the bands on it but my student budget didn't have room for it. In hindsight it would have been a sound investment as I would've become aware of he Canadian scene at a much earlier stage! Thankfully Bosshoss has made this comp redundant with the luvely Wyld Canada set. The greatest boxset that never existed.

I scored a copy of Nightmares From The Underworld, Vol. 1 directly from Andre Gibeault, who put both volumes together, via a Goldmine auction back in 1988. My copy is #024 of 300 and was a bit pricey even then at $45. Not a bad pressing but, yes, slightly muffled; Volume 2 suffers from this as well. Still, you cannot fault the track selections on either one!!

Does anyone know if the Timothy's Brain CD reissue of both Nightmares From The Underworld has improved sound quality over the original vinyls?

I have the UK versions (on Antar Records) of vol. 2 + a couple of the later ones, and they sound OK as far as i can recall.
However, I bought the recent reissue of vol. 1 on Past & Present, and it sounds like shit.

The Antar label releases of 'Texas Flashbacks' sound fine, no problem with those at all.
I've been after Volume 1 for years.

For certain 1 & 2 were copied in the late 80's by a certain JDM. These can be distinguished by the lack of a number in the top right corner & by a large center ring (indentation) on the label. Originals have a very small ring, less than 1" across. The reissues, at least the NY reissues, are a bit flimsier than originals, & definitely lack some punch. Not sure if the other volumes were also knocked off as repro's, as opposed to the original ( also sub-par) art Antar utilized.

If the Antars were all mastered from 1st press copies they ought to sound fine. I have volume 4 on Antar, it's OK sounding. Definitely better than the NY repro's of 1 & 2. These had both sold out by the time I became aware of them, though I did get in pretty early with Volume 3.

I don't know where you're from but the Antar repro of the Flashbacks show up on ebay and discogs (european sellers) from time to time, incl. #1.

The first BFTG volume was not done with any significant band 'tracking' or royalties. It was just another comp of records (the 45s belonged to at least three different people). I think the second one was the same, but I can only speak with authority for BFTG 1. That's why there's no pics, etc. Over a period of several years post release the band info and pics were accumulated and added to later pressings.

AFAIK the Monsters of the Midwest series was the first comp to make an effort to get band info and make a true annotated comp. It helped that the compiler knew many of the bands first hand!

I know, I've seen a couple of Volume 1's for sale but unfortunately from Italian sellers.

I've had 45s not arrive from Italy more than once before and now I'm kind of reluctant. Maybe I should try again...

This was discussed some years ago in the old Kopper forum. It' still accessible if you were a member but I'm guessing you weren't.. here as some detailed snippets:

to get this straight:
the first pressing was 500 copies (including the bonus "The Witch" cover by Mono Man backed by a Mission Of Burma or 2 - Erik L added deadwax scratches to it to make it sound like an acetate), of which there were 66 that i hand-painted the "back from the grave" front text with glow-in-the-dark paint, and these were reserved for mailorder only sales (plus i gave pals a few copies).
around 8 copies were actually mailordered, and i forgot about em until july 2000, when i found the remaining copies in a dark closet while emptying the old family house in preparation for its demolition.

Is it good? I'm looking for a new one.
I've used a Nagaoka MM 11A, which is great and was a bargain some years ago, but completely sold out.
If you can recommend this one, what's the exact identification number?
Anyone else can recommend a good system at a reasonable price?

Thanks,
Axel

In my experience Lyra produces excellent cartridges. As to whether the price is reasonable, well, there are pricier 45's extant...

Holy shit. That's the amount of money I wish I could afford to spend on an entire sound system.. :(

There should be a thread topic on sound gear, turntables, cartridges etc... I am about to get a project audio turntable and a grado cartridge.
