I'll be for a few days in dalas and boston. Can anybody tell me the names of some interesting shops there selling vinyl records (60 garage punk,psych,...)? Thx.

When you're in the Boston area check out Welfare Records in Haverhill, Mass, Garnicks in Lowell, Mass, The Record Exhange in Salem Mass, and In Your Ear Records in Boston. There may be a few I missed that have opened since I moved from the area years ago.

Boston: Go to Reed's shop, called In Your Ear. Located on Mass Ave in Cambridge (just across the river from Boston). Tons and tons of 45s. You won't find killers there but with time, patience and fortitude, you'll be able to find some cool discs to add to your collection.

Revere, Mass (just north of Boston): The Record Exchange. Lots of 45s as well, ask to see if there is a box of "better stuff". You'll pay top dollar, but these guys know their stuff.

Don't bother with Garnick's in Lowell...Jeez, Paul, have you no shame??

Me and my buddy just drove up (from Houston) to Dallas for the day to go shopping a couple weekends ago. Doc's in Ft Worth is great. Not that they are filled to the brim with garage grails or anything, but got a stack of fun 45s that I enjoyed. And a couple rockabilly 45s that were tough to find. And a Steffek 45 that I had not been able to grab a copy of til that day (cellar dwellers).
Forever Young is a bummer for 45s. Nothing but 80's jukebox "golden oldies series" stuff.
I might also suggest the various Half Price Books in the area as a source for who knows what. went to the main location hand found better stuff than I was expecting.

I suggest:

Top 10 Records 338 West Jefferson Blvd. - Dallas, TX 75208

Can't vouch for the vinyl selection but perhaps you could just enjoy the history, get your tickets for the Caravan of Stars or even borrow their phone:sonny:?

I get the assumption that you foreign collectors think America's record shops are just loaded with amazing rare $1 garage records. Wrong. I live in Sacramento and I haven't been to a record store in over a decade. They are loaded with overpriced crap and if they do have anything decent they are on the wall or in a box in the back with a price guide or popsike price on them. Do yourself a favor. Be over here on a Friday or Saturday morning and hit the garage sales or flea markets. That's where anything rare, decent or cheap can still be had. Although I hear the East Coast is pretty wiped out.

The Flea Market and yard sale and thrift shop and antique store circuit is tough when traveling though. I mean, I love em, cause that is the only spot to gain access to an actual person's collection at a fair(ish) price, but for every good day where I find a thing or two that I would consider a "score" there are 20 or more times that it is musty bin of water damaged garbage (or unfruitful sales where the G+ written on, 1980's presses of elvis and beatles are marked at $100 each). Those 20 "bad" sales are what pushed me into the realm of taking a shot on buying crappy local private LPs. Now my house is full of em! I think that actual garage 45s that I have found at estate sales I could count on one hand, and all were living sleeveless for the last 30 years.
That said check out estatesales.net and see if there is anything going on on the days that you are in whatever town... and if you are driving from town to town, the more you can get off the highway and see what the small roads offer, the less picked over by like minded record dudes that spots will hopefully be!

The Record Exchange is in Salem , not Revere, which is just north of Boston as Mike said.

I haven't found good records at a garage sale in ages. Though a local recently found a box of 45s with some northern soul and a copy of a certain local Sea Ell record which he quickly offed on the bay for $500. Estate sales might be a good bet or an actual weekly flea market depending on how stiff the local competition is. Back road junk shops are another good bet. I hit one this weekend that I lay down some mileage to hit once a year and pulled some neat records including the Ronnie Dawson 45 on Banner and a weird prog double lp that pulls some change. I've pulled the Gentlemen, Spades, Groupies, House of David, Cynics, Heart Beats, Joe Poovey, Steve Mancha, Penthouse Five, and Mr. Lucky and the Gamblers in that town in the past. Another guy was in there just a month or two ago and the stuff I found this time wasn't there. It's luck and persistence though. Coming from overseas it's about the luck.

The Half-Price Books in Dallas are pretty good. I've never found anything in the new arrivals section at the big one, but always find neato 45s in the racks.
