Another record from Singapore. I know of three EPs by Don Aimin, each with a different backing band. The Sandblues, who accompany him on this record, performed similar duties for many other singers in late 1960s Singapore. ‘Kawan Ku’ (My Friends) is easily my favourite track by Don Aimin. It begins as a lively-paced pop song, but takes off to a new level about half way through with a crazy fuzz guitar break. The whole idea of the song is that we should take the time to meet up with our friends. Don suggests the best place to do this is in a park (hence, the cover photograph). An odd thing is that he says ‘any park there is will do, as long as it is not dangerous’. Well, that sounds like good advice, but I am not sure what the dangers might have been at the time.
