ebay fees up to 10% in April

In their continuing effort to be a bottom-feeder version of Amazon, ebay is "simplifying" their fee structure. For record auctions it means a raise in the final value fee from 9% to 10%.

What most annoys me about ebay is how they levy that percentage not just on the item, but also on the shipping, so if someone pays you $20 to ship their LP to Japan, ebay takes $2 of that, for no good reason I can see other than greed.

And of course, add on a few more percentage points for PayPal.

Ebay is discounting fees for fixed-price items, so large-scale sellers with stores will see the most benefit.

Your calculations are way off. Go read my post under Egay sales for the real deal. If you didn't have a Ebay store in the past you were just screwing yourself on final value fees. If you have a store the new fees are going from just over 4% to 9%. Not 9% to 10%. Either way you need to get a Ebay store for $15.95 a month. You will save a lot on the FVF. Go read my post on Ebay sales for the real scoop. Or actually I'll just go over and copy and paste my post here so everyone responds to the new fees in one place.

Well if I didn't totally hate Ebay before....I DO NOW...I just recieved a email from them with the new fee structure. They start by saying good news is coming. Starting next month sellers with a EBAY STORE ($15.95 A MONTH) now get 150 free listings a month. In this world nothing is free. So I go and check the new final value fees and they have doubled. For instance a $1000 record final value fee is now $3.75 for the first $50 and 4% for the next $950, which comes out to $46.50 plus 4% on top of whatever the shipping cost is (FUCKERS) The new final value fee will be....ARE YOU READY FOR THIS???!!! 9% which now doubles my old fee. They now have a different fee structure (4%, 5%, 6%, 7%, 8%, 9%) based on which category you list in. For records/music it's 9%!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So last month the post office more than doubled my shipping costs overseas which has killed me and now Ebay is doubling their fees. Oh, but you get 150 free listings!!! FUCK OFF EBAY!! I know why Ebay is doing this, it's because they're losing tons of money because of the shipping rates and these evil bastards will make it up on the backs of the sellers who have already been buggered. I just sold a AZITIS LP this week for $898.00 my final value fee was $42.00, next month that same final value fee will be $80.82. Also, any item over $250 has to go by Express mail International which will be close to $60 so add another 9% on $60 shipping which will be $5.40. The nerve of these fuckers to charge me $5.40 on shipping which I make ZERO on. I already lose 4% on shipping costs through Paypal. So my total fees to sell a $898.00 record will be $86.22. And then add around 4% for Paypal fees. This looks like the nail in the coffin for me and many others. This reminds me of our evil govt. They say they need to make more money to bring down the deficit. So rather than lower taxes and let people thrive so they spend more money and boost the economy, they raise taxes force companies to go out of business or lay off workers. So rather than bring in lots more money, they actually bring in a lot less. Ebay is doing the same thing. Rather than lowering fees and let sellers thrive, they are driving up fees (on top of the new insane shipping rates) and forcing sellers to go elsewhere (basically nowhere) or go out of business. A bumper sticker I saw last week says it all "We don't need higher taxes, we need more tax payers". The moral to the story is "Ebay doesn't need higher fees, they need more transactions" As of next month their transactions will plummet and so will their bottom line!! Sorry for the politics but I'm tired of getting fucked.

Exactly - and the govt is cutting the rural post offices and raising rates when more people than ever are depending on online selling to make a living. Urban post offices have longer hours, but you have to wait in line for half an hour or 45 minutes or worse. Stimulus money, whatever you think of it, would have been better used for helping the post office provide better service.

Most of ebay now is over-priced fixed buy-it-nows that sit around for months.

Actually ebay charges you a FVF on first option you offer for shipping. If you charge $3 for Media Mail in the US your FVF is based on this not on the $20 foreign shipping charge.

Have no fear... ebay profits are up and the CEO got a nice raise.

You know what that means? That's right... they will put that money right back into the economy which could very well lead to one or more jobs!

Ebay- for sellers- ain't what it used to be. That's the way it works... though. Capitalism, free markets, yada yada. Create a business that fills a void. Get people to use business. Make profits. Go public. Continually update and change the business to make bigger profits. eBay and Paypal employ thousands of people. That's all good. Right?

From looking at their new fee structure, ebay is trying to encourage large-volume sellers who are willing to take low profit margins. The bad news for buyers is they'll have more junk than ever to sift through looking for the better records.

As for jobs, ultimately this strategy will reduce the number of sellers on ebay, which will definitely hurt the economy.

eBay is not doing "great", they have been losing substantially to the Amazon.com marketplace. Amazon does not charge final value fees on shipping costs, which is a big plus for most sellers.

I agree. They took a huge hit when postage rates skyrocketed. Their bottom line was damaged and I knew 2 months ago that they would raise Final Value fees bigtime. I'm going to continue listed rarer more expensive records on the 'bay but I'll have to find a place to list $10-$30 records. I just really like the Auction experience for the better stuff.

What would your obvious first choice be for this? I'm looking to sell off my collection of 45s and have been sitting on the idea due to the current state of eBay. I have about 12k invested in them and am looking to break even. I'm tending towards set-sale lists but know that not all will sell that way and will need to have them listed somewhere to capture web traffic. In lieu of building my own website, I'm looking for the best option with the least overhead involved.

Post a full list on the set sale forum here - it will be indexed by Google so anyone looking for a particular 45 may find your listing and contact you, even though it may be weeks or months after you've listed it.

Actually this isn't necessarily true - if you offer both Media and Priority for US shipping and the buyer chooses Priority, then you will be charged a FVF on the Priority cost, not on the Media cost. If you're shipping Priority across the country, could easily be $1 in fees on the postage.

If the person buys more than one LP, you may still have to pay that $1 for EACH LP depending on whether you have combined shipping rules and whether that person pays for some records first and then buys others, and other variables like that. I had someone buy 11 LPs over the course of two weeks, and the FVF on shipping were all over the place - some at $1 each, some were less based on the media cost, I'm not sure why it turned out like that, but I wound up paying about $7 in FVF on shipping for a combined rate of $26 (double boxed, extra padding). That sucks! Do I want to spend an hour trying to connect with ebay customer service to clear that up? No.
