Elevators

The above photo also appears in Paul Drummond's incredible new book "13th Floor Elevators - A Visual History". I received my copy last week, and it's just amazing and essential, with hundreds of photos and scans of the band and memorabilia, as well as a very readable history. It really shows how the Elevators were asking for trouble with the law. Or at least ignoring the obvious dangers.

The photo is one of 7 similar shots featured in the book, all taken at the Teodar Jackson concert at the Methodist Center in Austin, March 12 1966. Short hair courtesy of a recent court appearance due to their first drug bust. Janis Joplin was also on the bill that night, which started the false rumor that she would team up with the Elevators or with Roky. It never happened, but she was influenced by Roky and later copied his screaming vocal style.
