G45 Ebay Watch

One of the very few intact 2nd Index LPs and probably the best condition. There has not been a copy offered to my recollection in a long time. Unlike a lot of people I think this is the better of the 2. The crude instros on the 1st LP don't do a lot for me (neither do the Bee Gees covers, but they are a little better to my ears).

The Rising Storm is probably $2500-$3 for a pretty nice copy.

IMO the WCPAEB LP on FIFO with cover is the top US garage-ish LP for rarity/legend, unless any more than the 2-3 copies with covers have been found. Bachs is probably #2, 2nd Index, Rationals Fan Club, Arkay IV, Rising Storm, Ones, Mystery Meat, etc

I always thought the first index LP was miles ahead of the 2nd. The condition on the copy offered on eBay was unreal though!

Yes, that seems to be the consensus, but why? I'm interested in hearing what people hear in the 1st LP. IMO both are interesting but have about 1/2 of a compelling listen and a bunch of filler/repeated ideas.

I agree. Not very exciting, and somewhat pedestrian.

Money better spent (and saved) would be to purchase a copy of the Savages Live and Wild LP.
However, I have to say that if the Troyes (Battle Creek, Michigan) unreleased LP had come out, it would sit at the top of the heap as the best garage LP of the era. Better than the Bachs by a wide margin, for those who champion that LP.

These higher-dollar eBay sales brought October to a close:

1. A VG+ copy of Faine Jade - It Ain't True/Love On A Candy Apple Day on Providence sold for $338.
2. A VG- copy of The Chants - Hypnotized/Elaina on B. Ware sold for $330.
3. A NM copy of Rick Kay and His Shades of Today - You Stink/Red Man White Man on Police sold for $898.

Thanks Mr. Down-n-out, for another very interesting instalment of eBay Watch results. It's one of the highlights of the forum for me, and I really appreciate the updates.

You're quite welcome. I'm glad you enjoy it. It doesn't seem to generate the amount of discussion I would like to see, which sometimes causes me to question whether or not anyone is paying attention.

Not sure if this has been mentioned over the 61 pages but, as the original poster has not been around for a few, should a new thread of the same concept be started so that the tallies at the beginning can be updated?

I am unable to take this on, but would love it if someone did. I certainly wouldn't consider it a challenge to my position in the G45 hierarchy ;)

I could take on managing the updates in a new thread, also going through all the old pages back to when Jim stopped posting. But I would very much like for Mr.Down-n-Out to continue doing the updates in the new group. Doing an excellent job with this today & I don't have the time anymore either to peruse eBay the way it needs to be done. But maybe we should wait until the New g45 List is up and running?

Getting the Savages LP is on my "to do"-list.

Your remarks about the unreleased Troyes LP sound intriguing. Never heard it mentioned before. Is anybody pursuing the idea of releasing this? Do tapes / acetates still exist?

Same here: muchly appreciated work, Mr. down-n-out! Even though seeing final sales mentioned again pour new salt into old wounds (is that an english saying? probably not)

Thanks Mike. I didn't realize that existed either. "Rainbow Chaser" is such a great record, and so is "Love Comes Love Dies." If the other songs maintain that level of quality, it ought to be pretty good. How is the sound and packaging? Some of those older Cicadelic CDs are pretty, uh, rudimentary, to put it kindly.

The songs are all original material, and they are excellent. I even like the one hard rock / heavy sounding tune.

I've had a cassette dub from an acetate that a Michigan collector owns since the early 1990s. I've had to listen to hiss, crackle and boomy midrange for 20 plus years, so the release of these tunes from the master tape is astounding! for me, it was the one release I had long been waiting for (other than the unissued Rogues / Squires tunes). I hadn't heard 4 songs before as those were not on the acetate disc, or the the re-recording of Rainbow Chaser. The acetate disc must have been the finalized tracks for the proposed LP.

The main flaw i have with the CD is that whoever did the audio mastering allowed the audio program to immediately "kill off" the natural, ambient fade outs you normally hear on LPs. As soon as the song starts to lose audio peak, it just STOPS, as if someone immediately turns down the volume knob on your audio component. This is most irritating, and for me is the mar / blemish on an otherwise stellar release. It's a shame as that could have been easily avoided with some quality control. Very surprising for an Ace/Big Beat package.

Very surprising for an Ace/Big Beat package.

The Amazon link above says the label is Cicadelic, I didn't realize there was Ace/Big Beat involvement, but looking again at the back cover photo in the listing, I see Alec P. credited. That alone is reassuring. Sorry to hear about the cold endings to the tracks. I don't know if that will bother me, especially as I'll be hearing all those songs that way for the first time, with no other point of reference. Maybe someday they'll do a deluxe LP release of the album as originally intended, or as close as can be determined. Yeah, right.

It is a Cicadelic release but Alec handled the mastering. It sounds amazing to my ears.

That's what persuaded me to buy this release (I didn't know about its goodness).

The Alec P.'s participation is definitely a quality warranty!
