I heard folk harmonies straight out of 62 and 63 on the Aquamen single. But not before I was treated to that drum intro summoning up a vision of a young Michael Clark in a high school marching band. Out of nowhere, this is followed by horns and some funk infused rhythm guitar.
Then we get a folk song complete with heavy handed vocalizing a la Barry McGuire. Now, as mesmerizing as that is, it's the "huhs" being sung in the background that really sells it for me. This record suffers from an identity Crisis. The Les Baxter's Balladeers version, also on youtube, strips away the excesses of the Aquamen's version.
I listened to the Balladeer's version for the very first time whilst having a critical listen to this "floor filler". Folk harmonies straight out of '62 and '63 indeed! Incidentally, I found the Les Baxter while I was googling for the Aquamen. I found an instance of a sale on collectorfrenzy which features a description that positively nails the ebay seller approach. Here 'tis
DYNAMITE stomping northern soul / mod / new breed r&b / popcorn dancer. Now that is what I call a description!
