Okay, forget it. Just visited the seller's web-site and he has tons of "brand new" ;) 45's for sale BUT doesn't mention this on his ebay.de site.

The scan shows an original for sure, but I think Philistine was wondering whether the seller was genuine. I guess I'll find out soon enough

Over on Fabebook, a VG- copy of The Keggs - Girl/To Find Out sold for $1500.
I could see a number of heavy scratches in one area of the record. In the audio clip the scratches made continual noise on each rotation, getting worse in the middle and end of the song. No skips, but the seller has bragged elsewhere about his ability to remove skips from records. VG- would be a generous grade for this copy. Congrats to the seller and buyer in any case.

If this was polished and still sounded that bad it must have been a real beater to start with . Obviously this is more a trophy piece than a record that can be enjoyed !

I agree but with a record like that it's essentially now or never. I think the concept of overpaying or setting a price to the condition goes out the window with records of that level of desirability and rarity.

It has been discussed a little elsewhere but there are a lot of lesser condition records hitting high prices in the not quite common or garden category but certainly not super rare stuff. I was watching a cool and scarce record this last week, it's been on my wants list a while, a VG- copy turned up followed by a NM copy a couple of days later. The VG- copy went for $90. The NM copy is still active but I doubt it'll go for more and previous NM copies have gone from $75-80. It almost feels like a premium is being paid for the wear and tear in a similar way to the trend a few years back for "distressed" clothing to be more expensive, perhaps it adds to the authenticity, or perhaps younger or less experienced buyers are suspicious of NM records being bootlegs, I'm not sure. It's a funny old world.

I think you're onto something here , that would explain a lot of irrational bidding . Of course once dealers get hip to that they'll scratch up their repros . I had a somewhat similar case once , then a dealer sent me an obvious xerox copy of a pic sleeve with lots of little creases graded vg....

I was the winner of this. While I wouldn't call it a nightmare, there is a long story associated with this that is still going. I will share when I can find the time.

I think the seller is also the person I got my copy from a few years ago . sees very familiar. i know the guy i got it from lived in northern Georgia - he told me the story when he worked in a record store and some chick came in with the 45 back around 1979, he bought it from her and filed it.

I don't think beat up records selling for exaggerated prices is because of hipster 'shabby chic' concept. More because people have such short attention spans they take the first available when they see it and have no interest in waiting out for a nice copy or a bargain. Also because people are checking their DJ bookings and thinking if they buy this today they can have it for their next DJ night.

I see The Human Expression Optical Sound/Calm Me Down went in excess of $2k last night.

Anyone on here? Big price but one of the best.
