G45 Ebay Watch

Hard to say, a lot of morons bid this way after what I've seen.

Who knows what goes through the mind of a blithering idiot. I once withdrew my bids on a Gin Gillette 45 after another bidder kept entering $1 bids until the reserve was met and then he/she cancelled all bids. I smelled a rat, withdrew mine & the 45 sold for less to a third party :crap:I still don't own that record...

The fact that the two high bidders have bid almost exclusively on this sellers items (75% and 94%) looks suspicious. Ebay only shows bidders' history with a seller for the past 30 days, so its impossible to tell if this really shilling or not, but it looks strange to me.

Report the item to ebay and mention shill bidding?
Or call them, I did once and got them to end an item based on the bidder's bidding pattern and history.

Here is one nobody will shill bid on.
Whenever I stumble across these "Never seen a copy in 30 years" claims but no sound clip is offered, it's a 99% guarantee that the record is anything but a monster / killer. Logic befitting of a total moron.
Think the buy it now is a fair offer?

I contacted him and asked him to add sound files. He responded by saying "call me and I'll play them over the phone". :biglaugh:

I asked the seller if, as a "garage" record, did it sound similar to The Seeds, 13th Floor Elevators, The Sonics, ect. To command a price that he is offering it for, it should be as strong as these groups? No reply yet.

I was one of the under bidders on The Illusions.

I got a sound file of the record and it was still a reasonable playing copy.

It's probably my number one want (along with The Mourning Reign "Satisfaction Guaranteed, a beat up copy of which is also up at the moment with a similarly high buy it now price) so I was disappointed to miss out but I'm not surprised it hit this price, I'd have estimated this before hand. I just wish my pockets were deeper.

It's only been on Ebay a handful of times in the last 6 years and it could well be another couple of years before one comes up.

If anyone wants to sell a copy, please give me a shout.

When did the last mint minus copy show up for sale?

The last couple on Ebay have both been VG (both went for between $700-800, not a million miles from this one) and before that you're looking at 2009.

Is is a killer record? Undeniably.

Is it seriously hard to come by in any condition? Yup.

I can totally understand why someone would say "fuck it, I'm going all in for this one" when it could easily be 2 years before another shows up.

I know I'm far more forgiving on condition if an item is genuinely hard to come by.

I find it far less odd to see a stone cold killer like this go for nearly $1000 even if it is a little beat up compared to something like a NM Bit A Sweet going for $500 or, worse, this - http://www.popsike.com/THE-AQUAMEN-...ORTHERN-SOUL-GARAGE-1966-NM/262322950328.html

Based on popsike, I make it 20 times Line and Track has gone in excess of $300 in little over a year, with it hitting $600+ 9 times over the same period. Now, that is fucked up.

Not criticizing that thought process at all. Records are more forgiving than other collectible artifacts, in that the visual condition might be far, far worse than the playback condition. I've downgraded some 45s in the past, since the offer was generous for the better condition copy. If the playback is nearly as good, I'm not concerned with seeing my ugly mug reflection when looking at the 45.

We've discussed this before but the Illusions was never a rare 45. It IS sought-after now, by newer collectors who have come along since the 1980/1990s. There are near mint copies tucked away in collections. I saw one offered every month in Goldmine Magazine by that nutjob in Michigan, Record Archives or Worldwide Sounds...
Lots of guys I know bought / bid on these copies. Tim W had a few as well when he put the Grave 5 comp out in 1985. And I know copies have been sold on ebay that do not show up in web auction archives. I sold one VG++ in the early-mid 2000s, think it bid up around $400-450. Babelfish was the winner, I think.

The Aquamen is another deal entirely. Current prices paid have no relation to true value or legacy. Soulies are hot for this disc (shows their questionable taste, I say), dubbing it "a new discovery". Bulls**t to them, we knew about this 45 for 40 plus years. No one would pay more than $20 for it. Just one reason I now find the "soul scene" worldwide to be so very lame and boring. I'd be pissed off if I had to hear "Line And Track" eveey DJ shift change.

I just hope it's not another 2 years before the next copy of The Illusions shows up (and I have cash at hand when it does). I snagged The Chob recently though so I cant be complaining to much about getting out gunned here.

I'd have to agree that the Illusions is not an extremely rare 45. Highly sought after, for sure. I think you were lucky to miss the eBay copy Mr. Beast. I'm sure you'll get a better copy and a better deal, in reasonable time.

Here's what the Oracle says the eBay copy was worth :

SA10 + SB8 + R7 + L9 = $1030 in mint condition

Or $275 in vg minus

Even with a x2 "hot item" factor, it's only a $550 value.

Like I said, if any of you want to sell me a VG- for $275, of even $550 or a minty one for a grand, please don't hesitate to give me a shout.
