Harpsichord in the garage.

That is indeed a magnificent song. The Limey & The Yanks version above is just fantastic, but believe it or not it's only my third favourite version of that song. (#2 is the original version by Bit' A Sweet, and best of all is the Marauders version on Laurie)

I can't think of many obscure garage songs with harpsichord, which does sound great when used in the right way on '60s recordings. One example is the introduction to the Electras "Action Woman", but it only lasts a few seconds. Many well known bands of the era definitely did use it - here is a list, some from the top of my head and some from a google search!)

Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Zombies, Small Faces, Donovan, Love, Who, Monkees, Beau Brummels, Left Banke, Millenium, Hollies, Leaves, Move, Hendrix, Nazz, WCPAEB, Turtles...and others. But for strictly garage bands, I await to be educated.

Limey is just perfectIon for me. Right amount of angst vs harmony and that cheeky harpsichord just gives it some suave style.

I thought The Mauraders was the first release of Out of Sight, Out of Mind - '66 (I do like the crudeness in theirs) Bit' a Sweet wasn't out till '67 So the last of the three listed? I'm not keen on the guys voice, the whole thing kind of stinks to me. I know it's a popular fuzzed out punker but it leaves a Bit'a taste in my ears.

The only Harpsichord that jumps into my head is The Action - Shadows and Reflections But that's not garage and more modpop.

And that is definitely an accordion on the Shandels.

Public Nuisance went into the studio 1968 as a 4 piece and no keyboard player. The studio in L.A. had a harpsichord sitting in the corner so David Houston decided to wing it and throw it on this awesome song. I think you'll like the results.

The Mauraders - sept. 1966
Limey and the Yanks - oct. 1966
Bit'a Sweet - Feb. 1967

That's a bit odd. Because one of the songwriters of "Out Of Sight" (Duboff) wrote both sides of the Bit'A Sweet 45. He did not write both sides of the Marauders or Limey & The Yanks 45s. That's why I assumed the Bit'A Sweet was the original, which may be false. Maybe Duboff was in the Marauders first, and then quit and joined the Bit'A Sweet...or maybe he was just a songwriter hired by one or both bands....a mystery!

Here is Steve Duboff from his Discog page. It says he wrote a whole bunch of songs and was a half of The Changin' Times.

Thanks you Captain! Hearing the Pharaohs made my day. Reminds me they had 3 other tracks on that tape, all quite good and all with accordion if I remember correctly.
