Here's a competition I've devised which is open to one and all.

Can you post a link to a '60s garage mp3, which no-one on the G45Central board has ever heard before? If you can, you will be awarded points as follows:

Only 5 members have heard the tune before - 5 points
Only 4 members have heard the tune before - 10 points
Only 3 members have heard the tune before - 15 points
Only 2 members have heard the tune before - 25 points
Only 1 member has heard the tune before - 50 points
No-one has ever heard the tune before - 100 points

It can be a 45, LP track, compilation track, unreleased acetate, tape, or just a link to an mp3 on youtube etc. You can post links to 6 different songs which will all count to your final tally.

One more rule. Please don't post anything which is known to be included on the upcoming Back From The Grave LPs. That would just spoil the fun for everybody who is waiting with bated breath for the new volumes.

I will start thinking about what I can post myself from my collection. In the meantime, join the fun and post your links here. There's a prize for the winner! Competition closes in about 30 days.

Should we list the band name and/or sing title?

Should we list the band name and/or sing title?

That's up to you. Not listing the band name would have the advantage of making it impossible for anyone to claim they know the track, if they can't name the band or song title. But that would only work once per track, until it was identified. I don't think anyone would make a dodgy claim in any case.

This will prove difficult to judge as everyone has a different idea of what constitutes '60s garage; therefore, you need a strict definition, or a voting system. Likewise for the quality of a song; for example, it should be voted at least 6/10 to qualify; otherwise competitors could win by posting lame stuff.

Having no limit on the number of songs will also favour those with lots of time on their hands. I suggest a strict limit. If two people tie for number of unknows, you can take it down to the average rating.

Based on the suggestions above, I have come up with a new set of rules.

Each competitor has a limit of 6 posts. The scoring remains the same as in the table above, but each score is multiplied by the garage-o-meter rating of the song. For example, a tune scoring 8 on the garage-o-meter which is known only by 2 members would score 8 x 25 points = 200 points. There is no need for any penalties, because if you waste your posts with inferior tunes or well-known tunes, your score will suffer in any case.

The winner will get to select one 45 from this display. No, not all of them:p The others may be needed for more fun competitions in the future. I intend to compete, but if I win, the first prize will go to the runner-up.

I can offer to be an impartial judge, if needed.

If desired, TBM song ratings might be a good method to validate a song's MQA (musical quality rating)

If someone wants to post a song with a MQA of less than 4, it could be allowed. However, the winner, or people in the running to win the contest would obviously be at the head of the pack of contestants if the MQA is of a higher rating. The higher the MQA, the stronger the candidate for victory.

I have 100s of rated songs which are not listed in TBM, in case someone has a certain tune in mind, and can provide the MQA rating.

Not listing the title and the performer - excellent idea, and forces the listener to do a bit of work.

Is this open to all countries, or just the USA? If not the later, than I can't help with the MQA or other areas.
I would suggest establishing the rules first, then setting a start / finish date before announcing the commencing of the contest to be fair.

That would be great Mike. I'm reasonably confident that most of us would roughly agree on the musical quality rating, but in case of a disagreement, you can be the final judge.

It's open to all countries. It will be quite difficult to come up with unknowns from countries such as Australia. I know of at least 2 or 3 members of the board who have in-depth knowledge of even the most obscure recordings. Slipping one past them will be a challenge.

I think I posted some unknown acetates last year, but I guess they do not count now. Nobody guess them then and I'm sure not now either.

I love that! Can't wait to hear the currently obscurest garage sounds on earth... (exciting indeed!!)

How is this criterion to be determined?

How is this criterion to be determined?

I agree it looks a bit diffuse, but a lot of the members here have been active for at least 8-10 years on different forums related to this one. So it's got to be a matter of trust. Biggest problem is involving enough people. Lots of lurkers, too few actively posting.

How is this criterion to be determined?

After the link is posted, registered members have 7 days to briefly answer the post if they know the tune. It would be good if the brief comment could include such information as the name of the band and where the tune was heard etc.

After 7 days, the points are calculated based on the number of people who knew the song, and the musical quality rating (awarded by Professor Moptopmike taking the popular vote into account at his discretion). The points will be added to the total points scored so far by that member. After points for 6 posts by any member have been calculated, that member's score will be locked.

At the end of 18th October 2014, the player with the highest points will be the winner.

I don't think it's too difficult. Why would anyone say "I know this tune" when in fact he has never heard it? I don't think anyone on here would be so silly.

I think every track that is added should be be doctored in some way (added dropouts, cut off part of the song, low quality recording etc.) or else some bootlegger will just steal the tracks and release a bootleg and take all the credit. ;)
