I'm switching to lighter boxes

Here's the stack of boxes sitting in the basement. Looks like somebody walked all over a few of them. No damage luckily.

I'm only happy when I'm sorting and organizing things. I've always been that way. I used to collect and study rocks and crystals when I was very young. Now I understand why.

I have a similar scruple: I'm happy when I'm working on a discography or doing bookkeeping. It's all about bringing order to chaos, and righting wrongs.

Imagine you decide to become - say - a Chris Andrews completist, shoving Athenians into box#2 - you'd have to redo all the following index cards...

No, I would just insert a new box after the first box, and split the first 2 boxes into 3 boxes. Then there would be tons of room for next time. I would only have to print 3 stickers using my InDesign template. Most of the time, there will be room in a surrounding box for any new 45, because I don't use strict alphabetical order. A lot of times, it will be a group name already listed (Rogues? ha). I'm also leaving regular spaces on the shelves for new boxes to be added.

I do want to have new shelves built. The current pigeon holes are not really suitable for the new system. They leave too much vertical space between each shelf, and they are too deep. I only need each shelf to be roughly as deep and tall as the full boxes, with a bit of wiggle room. Just flat, wide shelves without the pigeon holes would be best.

Would you mind posting a photo or two of the renovated record room, Mark? I assume it is finished by now.
Sure Gregor. See below. I'm planning on replacing the pigeon holes with straight shelves. That way everything will be visible from the front with nothing hidden at the back.
