Lost Sounds Montana, Vol. 1

Ahm $7000?

"$2,000 for digitizing archival recordings!"

I could make this at 1 weekend for nothing, mastering and digitizing, doesn't matter if it's vinyl record or tape!

"$3,000 for processing the recordings, creating plates, mastering, test/pressings, printing covers, and label printing."

Ok don't know anything about the price for a press of 1000 LP's in the US, this can be!

"$2,000 for marketing, shipping, distribution, and promotion"

WTF!

Agree with Joey. I published a friggin' 400 page hardcover book without looking for "Donations". I did take pre-orders once the book went to print, but I did the work to get a loan.
7 Grand seems quite steep for a vinyl pressing

I'll support it by buying one. Is this what releasing lps/cds has come to?

If you contribute, you get the LP and some other benefits. The intent is to support a worthy cause that might not otherwise have the funding to complete their project. I don't see anything wrong with it. It's a win-win if/when a project is funded. There's a lot of projects that I couldn't care less about, but for something like this I'm all in.

bull....these things are labors of love. I would shoot myself in the frickin' head before I ever asked for money to release one of my cds. If this stuff is any good it will sell and he will get his money back. If it sucks, he won't. Get real. Learn how to use Photoshop and InDesign like I did and press 500 copies. If you can't afford this, farm it out to someone who can. Mikey D. you are dead wrong on this one. Total BS!!!

Life is all about taking risks for something that you believe in, and is your passion. You can't guarantee your project will be a success.

I don't see Harold at Psych of the South looking for cash donations, and he has done FOUR volumes of never -released material from Arkansas. I've never had the pleasure of meeting Harold, but I do know he works hard and puts the effort into covering all bases - business, research, and promotion.

Maybe it is just me, but these 'please fund my projects' are put forth by people who are maybe lazy, and just looking for a handout in case of failure. But, hey, that seems to be the way life is right here in the USA nowadays.

This is it in a nutshell.
I've known plenty of collectors who've wanted to put out releases and couldn't afford to. This is exactly what many of them did (if they didn't work out private financing like MTM did). There are plenty of great small and medium sized labels reissuing 60s music. They have the resources without having to beg for it, and who would be more than willing to do a worthwhile release like this.
Just another example of the thought process of the Instant Gratification/Entitlement Generation.

I couldn't agree more.:tiphat:

Could not have said it better. I'm out.

Is it not possible that maybe one of the musicians this group has supposedly contacted has money to fund the project?

They just want too much, that's all. Does it not get made if they don't collect this $7000 first? The whole limited edition aspect I have always found a load no matter who does it, usually it's just small enterprise making an asset out of how many they can make though (which is a cute trick I don't begrudge anyone). At least get some artists to autograph the thing whatever it may be, but personally all I care about is the music and it's quality, and nice liners and pics are good too. But, Do I like something more because there are only X number of them? No. Sure, back in the '60s some record pressings were limited, but not as a gimmick.

I bought the recent early Pete Ham demos set from a similar funding site, but I was a bit late so it was essentially me simply buying one, and anyway, I read a review and knew it was pretty snappy looking and sounding. As for instant gratification... maybe that's me as I wouldn't want to wait around for them to get enough money 'contributed'!

Maybe Norton Records could use something like this though? Sub-Pop had that single of the month/week club in the '80s, you were sort of subscribing in advance (but they screwed Stereolab over something the groop gave them free originally, so they can eat dirt and die as far as I've ever cared).

Which reminds me: There was a guy who claimed to be writing and publishing the first book written about USA '60s garage bands. He announced this sometime in mid 2011 with a plea for donations via the Kickstarter website. The money was to be used for "research" - traveling to interview people, getting photos, etc. He promised that the book would be out in 2012. I believe he made his $2,500 donation target. I've not seen or heard a word about this book ever since.
I don't even want to know how much money I've spent out of my own pocket over 25 years traveling to do research!

"... we have created an interoperable XML metadata schema based on the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (ISO Standard 15836:2009; ANSI/NISO Standard Z39.85-2012) ..."

Does that mean they're making a database of their collection? :screwy:
There goes another $7,000 bucks.

I've completed three CD releases, Joey, all out of my own pocket, all legally licensed through band members and the Harry Fox Agency. I farmed out what I couldn't do, just like you suggested. I agree $7,000 is too high and will MORE than cover expenses. As a collector, I want to hear this stuff, and if contributing means I get to then I will (and did). I don't doubt the effort you and MTM put into your projects, but if everybody were like you two we'd be bombarded with similar cool projects. It takes GREAT dedication and, yes, available money to release the things you have...but not everybody is up to the task. Maybe thats why there are websites like indie-go-go. I will never not support somebody who is trying to legally share the music I want to hear.

Looking through the listings there I think some of those projects are fronts for pure greed or just ego maniacally elaborate... amazing how some find buyers/funders... even see some big companies have projects listed for the 'ultimate collector'... but then I saw one to put a tombstone on an old blues lady's final resting place and was quite touched! Is there anything to stop outright scammers taking the money and running? Like I could say I have two early Pink Floyd songs on a tape thought missing but want $20,000 or else! :twistedevil:

I'm involved with this project and I can completely understand how many of you would be hesitant to donate as you've completed similar project without asking for donations. All I can really say is that we are trying to get this project together to get this music published and out in the world, not to make money....and 7 grand may be too high of a donation goal, but we are just figuring out how to do this project and we have already incurred serious financial debts in accruing all the materials required to make this project as comprehensive as possible. I like this forum, I like garage rock music, and I can only hope that all of you understand that this project is being done with noble intentions in mind...not too make money. If we have money left over after we get this release out then the money will go right back into the Lost Sounds Montana project.

It wouldn't mater if it was $50. Asking for money for your project is BS. I will buy one and so will alot of others on this forum. Nuff said.:tiphat:
