New edition of BFTG (4 CD bundle)

Does this make it the third remastering? - I've lost track - otherwise, what's the difference between the "parts" and the "volumes" already issued?
 
Got mine today in the mail..haven't had a good listen yet but I expect the actual sound would be up there with the BFTG9 CD i.e top notch. Packaging is similar to BFTG9 but not as 'lavish' . If you have these on the original cd issues (as I do) I recommend re-investing. Also Your getting a whole lot of tracks that have only been released on the vinyl editions!
 
Mine landed today, the Mullards are warming up - "Juke Box Jury" time coming up throughout the night !

These new sets sound magnificent ! The Helikon / Krell setup seems to be used for most of the selections and the transfers sound articulate & musical with extended top end , open & detailed midrange & rock solid bottom end. There is no "digital fatigue" in listening to these discs.

I thought I could go through them in two sessions, but the high quality of sides represented made me savor them over a few evenings. Some old friends & a few new ones, in listening to them as a collection it hits you square on how incredible the selections are in defining a genre.

These sets belong amongst the best work of Harry Smith, Nick Perls & Guy Stevens. Don't hesitate, these things are the real deal !

I've had the (4) CD's for awhile, so thought I'd weigh in with my thoughts.
First, I should probably note that decades of live music have ensured that my ears will never (again) be "audiophile" quality. That being said, from the opening notes of Volume 1, I immediately noticed a VAST improvement in sound quality (note that this is in comparison to the earlier CD versions).
 
As I said, sound quality is vastly improved over earlier CD editions. Moving on, let's take a look at these volume by volume compared to the vinyl editions, starting (natch) with Volume 1.

Track listing on Volume 1 is identical to the 2nd Version of Volume 1 on vinyl. Same songs in the same order.
 
Volume 2, on the other hand, is completely different from the 2nd Version of Volume 2 on vinyl (which I believe has the same track listing as Version 1).

Gone are the following:
Unrelated Segments - Cry, Cry, Cry
Roy Junior - Victim of Circumstances
Triumphs - Surfside Date
Novas - The Crusher
Brigands - (Would I Still Be) Her Big Man

New (since the 2nd vinyl version of Volume 2) are the following:
Unknown Band - Little By Little
Hysterics - Won't Get Far
Sweet Cherry - Funny Things Floating
Deverons - On The Road Again

Furthermore, the order of the songs has been completely revamped.
 
Volume 3 omits the following (2) tracks from the 1st Vinyl edition of Volume 3:
Raunch Hands - Tiger Guitars
William the Wild One - Willie the Wild One

Again, the order of the songs has been changed.
 
Volume 4 omits the following (2) tracks from the 1st Vinyl edition of Volume 4:
Sonics - Santa Claus
Larry & the Blue Notes - Night of the Sadist

As much as I love the Sonics, I can understand the omission. However, I do NOT understand the omission of Night of the Sadist. This omission hurts the new edition.

Other than the omissions, track order is the same.

When volume 4 originally came out, the FORT WORTH SCENE Volume One set hadn't come out yet, but when it came out a few years ago with the original undubbed version (I believe from tapes) it made repeating it on BFTG 4 redundant. Also Billy and Tim are buds so they probably got together and decided to not use it on both. Just guessing though. I'm glad Tim took songs off the Graves that have since come out on other comps from masters only to replace them with other killer tracks. If you GUYS don't own the new rejiggered Graves yet, what the hell is your problem!!!???

After I typed my "review", I did a search to see if I had Night of the Sadist elsewhere. I realized it was on Fort Worth Teen Scene, and figured that was the reason. I just hadn't had a chance to note this. I agree with your reasoning. It's not always easy to tell with your confrontational tone, but I assume your last comment has to do with people who have yet to buy the new volumes - not with my questioning the omission of Night of the Sadist?
I have yet to listen to the last few volumes, but hope to soon, and will add my comments afterwards.

I wasn't out to set you straight or anything. I was just guessing as to why it was omitted. And my last line was directed to those on this forum who have not purchsed the new Graves yet. I just edited that line of my previous post as to not offend the thin-skinned who may be present. Confrontational?? Oh brother. :konfuzed:
 
Thanks for the review, Down. I received my copies earlier this week, and you've saved me the trouble of having to unseal them.
 
I've had the Grave sets for a few weeks.
I don't miss any of the deleted tracks, and nearly all of those are found elsewhere so no big deal.

Sound quality is vastly improved over the LP and early CD pressings. Next to owning the original 45s, I'd go with these over the older Grave versions, hands down. Unless you are tethered to nostalgia (a malt shop memories 1980s decade garage person...)

I've been blasting them in my car, always fun to see the reaction of square folks to "Stormy" played at top volume.
 
The version of Night of the Sadist that was on BFTG had organ on it, and I do believe that that version is not available anywhere else.
