Me too. I thought it was yet another one, but it was exactly this tune. Probably the toughest Downliners track, right?
I really wonder if they knew that Lou Reed and John Cale wrote it...
 
... or who those guys were anyway. Was the first VU album already out? Did anybody in the UK take notice of it AT ALL?
 
The All Night Workers (w/ Reed and Cale) did the original version in '65. Nothing to do with VU...
I think it's pretty cool, but the Sect's version is absolutely pulverizing, of course :)
 
YES!! Why Don't You Smile Now is a definite no-brainer in my book, and I had totally forgot about it.
But I think All Night Workers' version is more epic (and historically significant ;))

You're sure about that? The third Downliners album which it is on is from 1966.

Interesting thing is: the SONG doesn't sound like Velvet at all, but the ARRANGEMENT of the All Night Workers version has the typical monotone ringing John Cale-vibe of the first album...
 
It pre-dates the release of the first VU album. Also pretty sure the song stems from Lou Reed's days as a sub Brill Building hack cranking out tunes made to order.

As for that "typical monotone ringing John Cale vibe," Lou had that going on with " The Ostrich." Cale was astounded when Lou told him that all of the strings on his guitar were tuned to the same note.
