Phil May is dead

Before in the beginning. Scarce South African EP pictured at the end, for certain a top 5 worldwide vinyl rarity, likely scarcer than that though...

More '66. Anyone care to tackle a translation of the Billy Harrison article? The live pic is from a performance in Paris mid / late 1966, I like the fellow in the background attempting to save BP's amp (?)View attachment 3494

I had a quick crack at the above article. Some parts are very poorly written in the first place, so I apologize for the quality here and there. Anyway, they come off as a bit arrogant here and there, but I guess that's yoof for you...

Questions for The Pretty Things

How much stage presence?
50% of everything, and success is guaranteed. Many bands are great on record, but worthless «live». Because they have no stage presence.

Scandinavia?
Fantastic. The audience is the best we’ve had in the world. The teenagers come to see and hear us, and not just to make a racket.

The Who?
Oh, those guys! Well, we’ve played «Who» for years. The Who are only doing what you’ll find at a Pretty Things show. To be honest, we feel that this style is the future of pop music. It’s what will prevent pop music from getting stuck. But it will probably be a while before it is commonly accepted.

The future of pop?
The teenagers like pop, but too many journalists are busy belittling what is their livelihood. They forget that they are working for the public, and instead they are tending their pseudo-intellectual interests. Many of the so-called «big names» aren’t helping when they constantly complain about how crazy touring is. They should think more about how much they get paid instead.

The Stones?
They are something else. Creative and popular.

Gin and lime?
Give me a «snaps» instead (snaps = a Danish and Swedish word for a small shot of a strong alcoholic beverage taken during the course of a meal).

New Zealand?
Great audience! But the newspaper had it in for us from the start. They put us down with no regards to the facts. And things didn’t get any better when we stole the applause from Sandie Shaw, who was otherwise the big name.

Rhythm & blues?
It’s the backbone of today’s pop, but the British teenagers have become disappointed in the senile, old American r&b singers who come over. The UK bands are much better performers.

P.J. Proby?
We appreciate him as a human being, and also as an artist. Proby doesn’t just stand on stage and sings his songs. He performs all the time.

Riots?
Yeah, there was some trouble the last time we were here, but that happens everywhere. We enjoy an ecstatic audience, but not when a few thugs ruin everything for the teenagers who came to listen to us.

Beatles?
Simply fantastic.

Ken Dodd?
The guy who did «Tears», which was #1 for an entire month? Well, he’s alright for your mom or dad, but as a pop phenomenon he’s no good.

Barry McGuire?
He’s no good as a protest symbol, and in general we think the whole protest movement is nonsense.

Prince?
Is that a cigarette brand? Well, our Prince did smoke, too. Viv, that is.

Dylan – Donovan?
Donovan is the best singer, but no one writes songs like Dylan.
