R.I.P. Gary. As a European, The Monks was one of my earliest introductions into a wilder world. You could actually find their records at the local record fair, as opposed to the US garage 45s. A truly legendary band and a fab frontman! You wil be missed, but also fondly remembered.

I love each Monk so much. If you have not read Black Monk Time by Thomas Edward Shaw and Anita Klemke try to. It is the best band book ever. Each member is so lovable, their personalities are so like their instrumentation within the Monk sound.

Hijack? What the hell are you talking about? I loved the Monks book, but I think the Tommy James book is the best. You want me to start a new thread just to say I think it's the best rock book? Lighten up man.

I said "band book" not "rock book". A book about a band and the characters within the band. The Monks surpassed rock anyway. That may be a great book but Tommy James and The Shondells ain't The Monks. ..

I can't name me one Shondell.:p

I can name me every Monk and every knot each Monk tied in those ropes around their necks.

I blubbed last night for Gary, Dave and Roger. Then I blubbed for Eddie and Larry. Big rolling tears I was kind of shocked at myself. There I manned up and admitted it.

I'm a Monk, you're a Monk, we're all Monks.

The Ugly Things article introduced me to The Monks, and I immediately ordered the book...then searched out all the recordings. They were one of the first groups to legitimately hook me on "'60's garage rock". Very sad news. One of the great rock stories AND GROUPS of all.

I never had a chance to see the Monks. I have seen their documentary, I've also read their autobiography. The Tommy James book is a good one. You can always count on Joey to crash the show.

I've been a monk for over 30 years. Shit..and now that i'm in my 50's my hairline is truly monkish. I'll take the Monks over Tommy James & the Shondells too, all I was saying is the Tommy James book is the best. And they were a band, although a band who were thrown together after Hanky Panky broke.
