R.I.P. HUBERT SUMLIN Dead at 80

Happened to be listening to the original version of "Backdoor Man" this week. If that's Hubert playing on that one, then he was pretty amazing.

Yes...that one, Little Red Rooster, Spoonful and many others. This guy along with Howlin' Wolf are the lords of all things cool;)
 
such a shame, but what a life. most Howlin stuff post '55 has him playing on it. Dig that tuff guitar sound!
 
The earliest stuff was recorded at Sun in Memphis and licensed to other labels, and then he moved up to Chicago which must be when Sumlin started in the group. I thought when they cast Howlin' in that Cadillac Records movie they did pretty good, and I was worried about it! I always wondered how much Chuck Berry might have picked up from Hubert or J.B.Lenoir or did they pick up ideas from him, and maybe Bo Diddley too? (Great piece on Lady Bo in the first issue of Vintage Rock by the by)

Thought of Hubert S. last night when I heard The Yardbirds version of
"Good Morning Little Schoolgirl". Clapton's guitar break mirrors Sumlin's
classic solo in Howlin' Wolf's original "Shake For Me" 45 on Chess.
