The 1969-71 Ann Arbor, MI psychedelic band Sproton Layer are doing a reunion show Friday night 6/14 in Ann Arbor, then playing Detroit on Saturday 6/15. They also have shows in Cambridge MA 6/25, NYC 6/26, and Northampton MA 6/27.

The band consisted of brothers Roger, Laurence, and Ben Miller, plus friend Harold Kirchen. Roger Miller went on to Mission of Burma, the Alloy Orchestra, etc., while Ben and Laurence played in Destroy All Monsters for a bit and later worked with a 12-saxophone orchestra (Ben) and as a children's music performer (Laurence), while Harold quit music and became a carpenter.

Influenced by artists like the Silver Apples, Soft Machine, Pink Floyd, John Cage, and Stockhausen, the pot-inspired teens recorded an album in the Millers' basement, "With Magnetic Fields Disrupted" in 1970, which was first issued on vinyl in 1992 and on CD in 2011 by World In Sound. A second disc of unissued material is in the works, due in 2014.

I interviewed all four original members on my radio show Monday night, and it was a lot of fun! It was the band's first-ever in-person interview.

Here is a link to the interview (music clips have been trimmed in the middle):

I'm looking forward to seeing their first show in 43 years this Friday!

Why does the Cambridge show have to be on a weeknight, when I have to get up early for work the next morning? Would love to be there myself for this!!

You should try to make it, the Ann Arbor show was pretty amazing! Roger Miller resuscitated his original Sproton Layer Sears (or Montgomery Wards?) bass guitar and brothers Laurence and Ben were fully on board as well, with Ben in particular contributing some jaw-dropping trippy guitar leads. The show was all vintage material, a full time-transport to their pot-fueled high school selves.
