Mastering thoughts - edging up close to digital 0 isn't as much of a concern to me as brick-walled mastering that removes the quietest and loudest spots so that everything is the same loudness through the abusive use of digital compression (all the peaks and valleys getting levelled out so all that's left is a flat plain of harsh noise). That can be traced back to the 90s when cd volume began getting maximized through digital compression (Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica come to mind as early perpetrators of music mastering that when viewed was the equivalent of a sonic buzzcut). Loud mastering was by no means a new concept - you can go back to 78 mastering where dynamics were limited to make an overall louder sounding disc - the key difference was that analog compression was/is a lot kinder to your ears than their digital equivalents used today.
