What do you digital experts recommend for an external storage device?
My prime consideration is storage size. I plan on sorting and categorizing thousands of archived digital soundclips, and then back them up for future streaming plans.
I'm not interested in cloud storage options.
I am using PC / Windows software if that makes a difference.

Mike, like Daniel I use Western Digital without problems. I have two. One for normal use and one for backup. A good backup is essential in my opinion.

Thanks...what size drives do you guys have? Would you recommend something larger than 4TB, or less?
I think I'd prefer just having one. although if I set up an on-line music streaming site, I might be better served by having the music library stream sourced from one, and another unit to be set for backup-only.
Right now, my "back up" consists of a third laptop that just stores files and programs.

I've been using back up drives for about fifteen years. In the earlier years, I've had a couple of them go bad.
Over the past 5+ years, I've owned about 10 Western Digital's - ranging from 1tb to 4tb (these are the "passport" editions ). I've never had a problem with any of them.

Best advice I can offer is to also get a protective case and get an additional drive to back up your original back up.
Buying an extra may seem like a waste of money (seeing as though they are quite reliable) but the additional peace of mind is priceless.

Also, make sure that you eject them properly. Do not remove them from the usb port until you have disengaged them with your mouse at the bottom right hand corner icon.

I have been using Lacie 1tb by Grand and it has never failed me. However I am now using USB sticks and they never fail, plenty of storage space nowadays. I do use separate sticks for sound files and picture files.
