In my quest in collecting 45's on southwest garage (El Paso, Albuquerque etc region to be exact) i found this record from a northern soul dealer. Anyway I been trying to find some info but havent found much, Kenny Smith (suemi label founder) had a webpage but it doesn't seem to be working anymore.
A really think this label had amazing music, from surf to garage, and soul. And I think this record in particular is great, but I wanted to know what you guys know about or if it has been comped, rarity etc....Be glad to send audio files if not familiar with these artists.
I know Westex blogs and they are great! a lot of info.

David Caflan - You Came To Me / You Must Be Kidding

This one I think is more known, and it's been comped on garageband punk classics. The flip side is strong too.

The Wild Ones - I Want To Be Friendly / Something's Wrong

Isn't the Caflan a Bobby Fuller Four sounding rekkid? Colin Flannigan, the songwriter, was a member of the Four Frogs if I'm not mistaken.

Remember liking the Wild Ones... need to get a copy for myself.

I too noticed the Suemi page was down... a shame. Kenny's a decent fellow and more than willing to chat about the old El Paso days.

I'll be damned, yes Colin Flannigan, I just looked at my Four Frogs copy and he is credited on both songs. I think the Caflan sounds a bit harder than Bobby Fuller, if I am not mistaken this record was released in 65' but then again i am not so sure.

I'm actually from El Paso, but don't live there anymore, so its actually hard to investigate facts or hunts for records, I only go about two or three times a year, and when I go I visit a couple of friends from the late 90's punk scene Danny Salas and Gabe i think you mentioned them in your blog once.....and a friend I met recently, her name is Lana, she has an antique / furniture store on Doniphan st. west side of El Paso, she is friends with Doyle Young of The Motivaters, he recorded on Lin Jo records and Coronado (yellow label), she tells me he's always happy to talk about music, but his health is deteriorating. :(

It would be nice to hear some of that. I couldn't find it anywhere.

01/26/2017: Hi, I'm not familiar with your web site, but was told people were looking for info in Kenny Smith / Suemi Records. Kenny was a very close friend of mine in his later years (the last 20 years of his life up here in the Pacific Northwest / Poulsbo, WA). Musically, we played in various bands together and recorded together both in his own small studio and in other studios, but we were primarily close friends outside of the music arena . Kenny passed on in 2011. His Suemi web page was discontinued after a time, but I do not know the circumstances. He still had tons of recordings he made both in El Paso and in Memphis. Some of the El Paso rock material was re-released as collector records (primarily to the European market as I understood it, and under a name "Rockadelic Records" I believe). Kenny's wife still lives here in Poulsbo but I do not know whatever became of all the materials he had. Kenny's wife, Trudy Smith, has a presence on FaceBook, so you may be able to contact her there. If not, contact me and I will pass any queries on to her. If you have specific questions I can answer or I can point you somewhere for those, I'd be happy to do so. Wally Hampton, [email protected]
