tbm worthy?

I've always liked the poppier side of 60s garage. I'm not sure how the TBM folks would rate it but to me this is definitely comp worthy.

I like it, Ill add it to the new book, but I don't think it will rate very high....

The guy who put out this 45 (Pavia) was also involved with a release by the Forways "Confusion" (Baytown label) which is a similar sounding pop disc. sorta like a 5 cent Phil Spector wall of sound production, lots of reverb / echo, the whole group singing in unison. Definitely has the NYC local street doo-wop / Four Seasons type vibe melded for a pop hit sound. Makes sense, as Pavia was based out on Long Island.

Thanks MTM, I could not find anything on them, so put it here. Again, thanks for the info and personal remarks. I would not rate it very high either, but it is something unusual which is always good to hear and to know what's else is out there.

It's marginally better than the A side, which isn't saying much.
Poor man's Del Shannon.
I saw a few copies of this sell for a lot of money, must be for the rarity and the fact that it falls in the Fenton family of Michigan releases. certainly not for the sonic quality.

Needs a guitar break. Desperately.
The chicks singing background 'oohs' totally ruin the song.
Maybe a 2 rating, more like 1 for me. Far better categorized as a teener, the category for teen idol types and their wanna-be's.

I think using horns to replace the chicks would've made for a much better effort.

No, I don't like the song / 45. Does not matter if you tag it garage, teen, rock & roll, psych, mod spin....

If I were to add this single to TBM, I'd have to then go back and add 100s more that mirror this type of sound.
more work I do not want or need.

Ok, nevertheless I do love both sides.
I do agree about the backing vocals as i would have preferred horns myself.
My friend tracked down the singer and producer. The backing band was a local combo from a nearby high school that he hired for the session, but he couldn't remember the groups name. Fitting as they were dubbed "The I Can't Say's". The group may have been under contract. I'll try to find out further...

Was just curious since you did rate it. I was curious if that was a TBM rating (since does seem to be the gist of this thread - TBM worthy?) or a general rating. Obviously, it was the latter
I did like it, including the backing vocals (and would not have cared for horns instead), though I thought the A-side was bordering on wretchedness.

Yeah, it is definitely a borderline record at beast.
I'd never play it! I rejected it for TBM when I came across the songs last year.

Speaking of TBM worthy 45s: I saw the post on another forum where someone scored a copy of the Freedom V 45 (pre birmingham Sunday crew from Nevada).
Can anyone post both sides, or send them to me for ratings? That's one disc i had only titles and the group name documented - no label number or song titles, which is why it didn't make it into TBM. No one I know has this 45 in their collection.

I know the forum you mean. I'll PM the guy and explain this and see if he'll forward me sound files.

O.K, thanks. I meant to type that I only had the group name and one song title, not both. Were both sides issued on the Birmingham Sunday compilation CD?

Only the political campaign song--'It's Gotta Be Grant'-- is included on the CD. I can email you that side if you'd like.
