Texas - The Reel Deal!

The tapes are owned by Music Enterprises, which is not affiliated with Huey's estate. It's a private company.

As for the contents of the tapes, if you're familiar with Huey's labels then you know what to expect. Tons of blue-eyed soul, swamp pop, teen ballads, soul, Jimmy Donley, Barbara Lynn, Tommy McLain, Freddie Fender, Cajun, C&W ... very, very little of what we would recognize as rock and roll. Huey really didn't understand rock music post-1964 and generally ignored it.

Any chance of Bill Quinn or Bob Shad era acetates in the plans ? I also believe Quinn did a number of Starday (pre-Nashville) sessions there as well.

Here's a great article on Huey Meaux's life. I goofed up when I said the estate owns the tapes. The estate of the people Huey molested own the rights to the music. Or at least the royalties. As part of his plea he had to sign over all his rights to the molestees. Music Enterprises own the actual tapes. The guy was a piece of shit!!!

I never knew Huey P Meaux was a child molesting pervert. What a fuckin' creep.

I've checked my collection and I've noted that he produced records by Gaylan Ladd, Gene Ricky & The Swingers, Greek Fountains, The Hombres and Yesterday's Obsession.

I believed there was a thread here when he just died last year I believe? If not mistaken he got caught just south of the border of El Paso Tx in Juarez Mx.

ha! i googled Roy C. Ames and this is the first thing that came up...

"Roy Ames is the worst," Winter said. "When I see Roy's name on (an album), I know it's going to be trouble. If he put it together nobody is going to see a cent of it, except him that's for damned sure. This guy has screwed so many people it makes me mad to even talk about Roy. It's hard for me. My lawyer always says, 'You'll never get anything from the guy. He's so dishonest and so hard to track down that even if you sue him and win, getting the money is a whole different thing.' Maybe things have changed. I hope they have; maybe we can get him."

No, nothing from the Bill Quinn era survives at Gold Star.

The Starday tapes do survive, but they are in Nashville, presided over by a worthless slug named Moe Lytle.

There's also this:

http://blogs.houstonpress.com/rocks/2011/04/augie_meyers_on_the_late_huey.php

Meyers won't delve into Meaux's dark side, other than to say that Meaux took the fall for some bigwigs higher up the music-industry food chain when he was arrested in the 1970s and charged with sex crimes.
In that case, Meaux was convicted of violating the Mann Act in 1968. It was proven in court that Meaux brought a 15-year-old girl across state lines for immoral purposes; rumors have long swirled that some of Nashville's top record execs enjoyed her favors.
"He took the fall," Meyers says. "When he got out of prison, there was a new Cadillac with $10,000 cash in the glove compartment waiting for him. Nobody ever explained who that was from."

-----

This is just complete and utter bullshit. Huey didn't "take the fall" for anyone. He knew exactly what he was doing back in '65: take a teenage girl to the Nashville Disc Jockey Convention, use her as a prostitute, and hope that resulted in more airplay and promotions. This was probably fairly common practice in the music business ... it's the side that we don't hear about. Hits just magically happened,so we're told. Huey got caught; most of the others didn't.

Anyway, Huey inspired a lot of loyalty from many of his artists, so it's no surprise that they would make excuses for him. It's still pretty pathetic to see people still defending him even after his second conviction in '96.

I dunno anything about Lord August except for the SDQ but he has a SERIOUS problem of denial in the face of truth...

Augie - what part of

(taken from the 1996 story link above)
"According to investigators, some of the photos were of nude girls as young as seven. Some of the videos showed Meaux having sex with girls ranging in age from 12 to 16, among them the two daughters of Meaux's former live-in girlfriend."

Don't you get? Participant, maybe? Enabler? Sure there were plenty of 'adults' in the biz who had sex with teenage girls but this shit is way beyond a few backstage BJs....

Unfortunately this kind of behavior is something that goes a long way back before they get discovered/caught. Sandusky any one? no matter what legacy they leave behind, it will overshadow and taint any success they had.
Sometimes I play Bad Habits on Scepter and someone will ask who's that or who produced it or something and well i go bla bla bla but in my head keep thinking a piece of shit perv! haha
anyway just my two cents

The BAD HABITS rule...Fuck Huey, all he did was twiddle those little nobs. Double entendre intended;)
